But a shocking New York Times report unveiled a scathing 2018 email exchange between Hegseth and his mother, Penelope Hegseth, in which she wrote, “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth.” However, Hegseth’s mother clarified that she sent that email out of anger and apologized to her son.

Hegseth worked with Fox News for 10 years, first joining the network in 2014 as a political commentator. He then moved into a co-hosting position with Fox & Friends in 2017. At the end of 2024, Hegseth was nominated by Trump to be the U.S. Secretary of Defense upon approval. As a result of his nomination, Hegseth left Fox News.

Previously, Hegseth served in the military as an Army National Guard officer.

Hegseth currently has a net worth in the millions. From 2023 though 2024, he earned between $6 million and $9 million, according to his financial earnings disclosure report. Hegseth racked up a high fortune thanks to multiple opportunities, including speaking at public events and publishing various books. As seen in his financial disclosure, Hegseth earned approximately $900,000 in speaking fees for dozens of public events, and he made $348,000 from publishing The War on Warriors and $150,000 on Battle for the American Mind.

Also in Hegseth’s financial disclosure report, he received between $100,001 and $1 million in royalties from each published work.
