Bad News<\/a> is a simple tool to help students understand \u2018fake news,\u2019 the (modern?) phenomenon of misinformation and \u2018content as news\u2019 propagated, at least in part, by the rise of digital and social media.<\/p>\n (You can download an info sheet<\/a> about made for educators.)<\/p>\n As an interactive experience, Bad News helps students understand how fake news works, why it becomes popular, and its central mechanics and trends. It then allows players to choose certain fake news strategies, including emotional appeals, sarcasm, red herrings, personal attacks, and conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n It also introduces the concepts of content forms by allowing players to choose between fake news memes, photoshopped images, or actual \u2018content\u2019 (news stories and articles, etc.), with some strategies (personal attacks) and forms (memes) working better than others depending on the fake news topic.<\/p>\n Couple this with our The Cognitive Bias Codex: A Visual Of 180+ Cognitive Biases<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and you could have the beginnings of a crash course in critical thinking online.<\/p>\n Playing Bad News: Strengths And Weaknesses<\/strong><\/p>\n While I highly recommend the game as a teaching tool, I gave Bad News a couple of play-throughs and ran into a few areas the experience could be improved\u2013first and foremost, the \u2018rating\u2019 mechanic that asks users to rate the reliability of certain social media posts.<\/p>\n While it makes sense in concept, in practice, it\u2019s unclear exactly what you\u2019re evaluating the reliability of: the social media post, the user who shared the post, or the framing of the content in the post.<\/p>\n It\u2019s also not meant to be a full-on learning-about-fake-news simulation, so it\u2019s fairly thin in terms of what you\u2019re able to actually do from a mechanics standpoint\u2013which limits some of the utility and can leave it feeling a bit like a drawn-out finger wag at social media use in general.<\/p>\n That said, when the game is at its best\u2013letting you choose between heinous disinformation tactics in order to gain \u2018credibility\u2019\u2013it\u2019s hard not to shake your head in disbelief at how little critical thinking we practice on a daily basis in our lives. And fake news and social media are maybe just a microcosm.<\/p>\n The game is simple enough that you don\u2019t need instructions and if players make a mistake, it\u2019s short enough to just start over. As a kind of simulation, it is reminiscent of Plague, Inc<\/a>., a feeling reinforced by Bad News developers stated mission of \u2018vaccinat(ing) the world against disinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n If you want to introduce students to the idea of fake news and the tactics used by media publishers to change user\u2019s perceptions about news\u2013and in turn, reality itself\u2013it\u2019s a brilliant little tool to get started.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.teachthought.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/bad-news-game-screen2.png.webp)
