Can we use the ADP-Stanford Digital Laboratory series (<a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/archives\/2025\/10\/september-private-nonfarm-payroll-employment-according-to-adp\">which missed consensus by 84K on the downside<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>I think the answer is yes\u2026and no. As noted by other observers, the month-on-month correlation of ADP and BLS series is low. However, the quarter-on-quarter is fairly high. A regression of BLS series on ADP series (3 month log differences) yields:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/adpregression1.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58236\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/adpregression1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/adpregression1.png 420w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/adpregression1-300x230.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over this period, the q\/q growth rates are highly correlated, and have roughly unit elasticity.
