Just off Chinatown, it\u2019s an oasis for film lovers around the country, a\u00a0<\/span><i>truly\u00a0<\/i><span>independent cinema that\u2019s doin\u2019 it for the people. It\u2019s surprising, then, that the writer, director, editor of\u00a0<\/span><i>The Regulars,\u00a0<\/i><span>Fil Freitas, who himself worked at the cinema rising from front of house to manager, seems to really hate the general public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Shot by cinematographer Ben Rolph almost entirely in the cinema itself in timeless and impressively-sharp black and white, the film plays out like\u00a0<\/span><i>Clerks\u00a0<\/i><span>by way of\u00a0<\/span><i>Dazed and Confused\u00a0<\/i><span>through funny and lackadaisical observations. A\u00a0hang-out movie with an underlying critique of the meagre quality of life that the mythical London Living Wage provides. Freitas stars as himself, as does his girlfriend, Dusty. They\u2019ve both been working at The Prince Charles <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>too long\u201d, and as manager, Sam (Ricardo Freitas), says, the job is merely a <span class=\"push-double\"\/>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>stepping stone\u201d. These people dream of grandeur; they\u2019re musicians, writers and performers. But how can anyone expect to break out of the mediocrity of the stale, popcorn-infused carpets in this climate?<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"my-10 bg-[var(--color-background-accent)] font-primary text-[16px] font-bold rounded-[16px] p-8\">\n<h3 class=\"!mb-4 text-[24px]\">Get more Little White\u00a0Lies<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The film is a\u00a0collection of interactions that work as a\u00a0mood piece rather than a\u00a0cohesive three-act narrative. Freitas clearly understands the drawbacks of hospitality, and anyone who\u2019s had a\u00a0customer facing job will relate to the daily frustrations customers inevitably provide. A\u00a0couple spend far too long deciding the flavour and size of their popcorn, while new recruit Sophie (Bronte Applyby) gets used to the throwaway problems to which everyone else has become desensitised.
