However, to me, one interesting coefficient is on the 10 yr Treasury yield, <em>10yr treas<\/em>: 0.04 (significant at the 10% msl).<\/p>\n<p>The author writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026there is also the possibility that the small coefficient on the 10-year Treasury is the result of misspecification, but structural improvements on the model are left to future research.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I think that any careful analyst would (1) look at the data, (2) compare the estimates obtained to those in the literature, and (3) check to see if one understood the units these variables were measured in. On (1), the author did not provide time series graphs (nor did I see the sample period, although I know it\u2019s 10 years), so I grabbed a time series plot of averages:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57684\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019-1024x519.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019-768x389.jpg 768w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/muni_rates_thru2019-624x316.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Source:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/yield-spreads-between-government-municipal-bonds-favors-chip-mironas\/\">Mironas (2019)<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While these are yields for all muni\u2019s (state and local), they give an idea of the magnitudes in involved.<\/p>\n<p>However, here\u2019s the summary statistics for the data set used in this paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57690\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1053\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a.png 1053w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a-300x84.png 300w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a-1024x286.png 1024w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a-768x214.png 768w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/antoni_dissertation_tab3_3a-624x174.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1053px) 100vw, 1053px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice the interest rate mean for state municipal bond yields as proxied is 0.041, while the annual average interest rate on 10 year Treasury notes is 2.4048. This suggests to me the author has slipped in the ratio (in decimal points) for the dependent variable, and the percent rate for the 10 year Treasury. Either is good, but in order to make the coefficient comprehensible, I would\u2019ve either used the decimal formulation for both, or the % formulation for both.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, the percentage point for percentage point coefficient is not 0.04, but rather <em><strong>4<\/strong><\/em>. I\u2019d say this is a large \u2014 rather than small \u2014 coefficient. I\u2019d guess on the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1058330099000105\">Crowder-Wohar (<em>RevFinEcon<\/em>, 1999)<\/a> that a coefficient on the order of 1.3-1.4 was more likely.<\/p>\n<p>We all make mistakes; however the fact that the author was unwilling to investigate this odd result bodes ill.<\/p>\n<p>As an aside, for a key coefficient like credit rating, I would have allowed a nonlinear transformation (say dummy for AAA, dummy for AA, dummy for all the B\u2019s, etc.).
