However, there other aspects of policy that bear watching \u2013 especially immigration.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yesterday, Mark Zandi was stating his case for being wary:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"keep\">Moody\u2019s Analytics chief economist\u00a0<span class=\"person-popover\" data-nid=\"18977\"><a class=\"person-popover__link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/mark-zandi\/\">Mark Zandi\u00a0<\/a><\/span>said the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5432944-trump-economy-jobs-report-bls-firing\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5432944-trump-economy-jobs-report-bls-firing\/\">U.S. economy<\/a>\u00a0is \u201con the precipice of recession,\u201d citing indicators from last week\u2019s economic data releases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"keep\">In a social media post Monday, Zandi pointed to stagnant consumer spending, contracting construction and manufacturing sectors and projected employment declines.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Rising inflation makes it difficult for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5427938-federal-reserve-interest-rates\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5427938-federal-reserve-interest-rates\/\">Federal Reserve<\/a>\u00a0to provide economic stimulus,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Markzandi\/status\/1952008077558858194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the economist said<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While unemployment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5431692-labor-market-stalls-july\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business\/5431692-labor-market-stalls-july\/\">remains low<\/a>, Zandi attributed this to declining labor force growth rather than economic strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe foreign-born workforce is shrinking and labor force participation\u201d is falling, he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here\u2019s my picture of the state of the economy, with series not restricted to NBER BCDC\u2019s key indicators, and substituting in final sales to private domestic purchasers for GDP:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/uwn_indic_2a.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57508\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/uwn_indic_2a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/uwn_indic_2a.png 820w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/uwn_indic_2a-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/uwn_indic_2a-768x498.png 768w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/uwn_indic_2a-624x405.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 1:<\/strong> Nonfarm payroll employment (bold blue), personal income excluding current transfers (bold light green), civilian employment, experimental series with smoothed population controls (orange), industrial production (red), S&amp;P Global monthly GDP (pink), and final sales to private domestic purchasers (teal bars), all in logs 2023M01=0.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Personal income, consumption, civilian employment, and monthly GDP are all below recent peaks. Industrial production is up, but nonfarm payroll employment is essentially flat over the last three months (33K\/mo).
