And it\u2019s fair to say that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xbox.com\/en-us\/games\/store\/rematch\/9n5k7hwxl4q6?msockid=339d5f0b82f660dd12894a3a834d61fa\"><em>Rematch<\/em> <\/a><\/strong>has made clear that there\u2019s a hunger for new approaches to the beautiful game.<\/p>\n<p>Since release (including launching day one with Game Pass), Sloclap\u2019s wonderfully physical take on the game has <strong>passed 3 million Xbox players<\/strong>. Not only that, but <em>Rematch<\/em> broke an Xbox record before it even came out \u2013 its <strong>Xbox Insider beta saw every available slot filled faster than any game before it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For those who haven\u2019t played yet, <em>Rematch <\/em>is a small-scale team game, pitting groups of 3, 4 or 5 players against one another in frenetic six-minute matches. The basic rules of the real-life sport apply, but it draws just as much on Sloclap\u2019s history with action games (following their work on <em>Absolver<\/em> and <em>Sifu<\/em>). When you work in the fact that each pitch has walls that can be used for rebounds or trick dribbles, and systems can collide and coalesce in a single, flowing move, it only gets more interesting. My Xbox capture library is now awash with replays of my team\u2019s best moments (and most hilarious mistakes) \u2013 and that shareability is a huge part of why <em>Rematch <\/em>is capturing an audience. It doesn\u2019t just feel good, it <em>looks<\/em> good.<\/p>\n<p>The take-up has been phenomenal as a result. \u201cWe were honestly blown away by the response,\u201d Creative Director Pierre Tarno tells me. \u201cSeeing over three million players jump into <em>Rematch<\/em> within a week from launch was both exciting and humbling. It confirmed for us that there\u2019s a real appetite for this kind of team-based, fast-paced football experience.<\/p>\n<p>A big launch was crucial to the team, and Game Pass became a major part of that goal. \u201c<em>Rematch<\/em> is, at its heart, a social experience,\u201d Tarno continues. \u201cIt\u2019s about playing with friends, sharing great plays, and having fun together. So reaching a broad audience early meant we could create the right environment for that to happen. That work, in building a stable foundation to build on, will continue:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, our top priority is making the game feel really solid and reliable. That means squashing remaining bugs and improving online replication. Things like desyncs or frame drops should be things of the past and we\u2019re pushing hotfixes and patches to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re focused on fixing what matters most first, then layering in new content, modes, and depth over time. And we\u2019ll keep you updated as soon as we have clearer dates for these updates.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seasons Change<\/strong><strong\/><\/h2>\n<p>But part of what makes <em>Rematch <\/em>particularly interesting right now is a philosophical decision from the developers. Turn on the game today and you\u2019ll find \u201cSeason 0\u201d emblazoned across the menus \u2013 it\u2019s a purposeful choice of words, meant to communicate that what you\u2019re playing now is the most basic version of the game. The goal is for <em>Rematch<\/em> to evolve over time, shaped both by our own vision and by player feedback. Season 0 is the first step on what we hope will be a long journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So where does the game go from here? Tarno tells me that cross-play across all platforms is the \u201cabsolute priority\u201d, bringing its millions of players into one group. \u201cWe know how much it matters,\u201d he continues, \u201cand we\u2019ll share a timeline soon. Beyond that, we\u2019re adding features like squad spectating, seamless squad re\u2011joining, and better ways to keep playing with teammates you click with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more beyond that. Like other live games before it, <em>Rematch <\/em>could offer entirely different ways to play in future in the form of new modes or experimental game types. \u201cWe want to introduce new temporary game modes in the future, some of which may become permanent by popular demand,\u201d says Tarno. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at different types of game modes, some more \u2018arcade\u2019, some more \u2018realistic\u2019, and we\u2019ve already started prototyping ideas for the next game mode!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Rematch<\/em> already feels different to many of its peers \u2013 so the idea that it could <em>add<\/em> to that feeling is incredibly exciting. Seeing a studio embrace a tough-to-crack genre, offer something truly new, and see this level of success is inspiring:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love football, we love third-person action games, and we wanted to bring something fresh to both worlds,\u201d enthuses Tarno. \u201cWe weren\u2019t looking to compete with traditional football sims.
