One upshot of the Cannes beef with Netflix is that all the streamer\u2019s heavy-hitters tend to come later in the year, right at the door to the vaunted and ever-extending awards season corridor. And this year, it seems as if they\u2019ve got a\u00a0number of major titles competing against one another in the big race for the Golden Lion (won last year by Pedro Almodovar for\u00a0<\/span><i>The Room Next Door<\/i><span>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Guillermo del Toro\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i>Frankenstein<\/i><span>, Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i>A\u00a0House of Dynamite<\/i><span>, and Benny Safdie\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i>The Smashing Machine<\/i><span> will all be representing the big red N\u00a0this year, and with this many quality horses in the race, how can you lose? We\u2019re also very excited for the new one by Jim Jarmusch (<\/span><i>Father Mother Sister Brother<\/i><span>, that was mooted for Cannes but never quite made it),\u00a0<\/span><i>Bugonia<\/i><span> by Yorgos Lanthimos and\u00a0<\/span><i>No Other Choice<\/i><span> by Park Chan-wook. Of the deep-cuts (and there are many!), we\u2019re excited for the return in the out of competition doc strand of the great Lucrecia Martel, and there\u2019s also a\u00a0new film from Laura Poitras also.
