What do you think of when you hear the phrase \u200b\u201c<\/span><\/span>la dolce vita<\/i>\u201d? If, like us, you\u2019re a\u00a0fan of Italian cinema, chances are one of the first images that will spring to mind is of a\u00a0man dressed in a\u00a0tailored black suit and sunglasses, leaning back in a\u00a0caf\u00e9 chair, feet resting insouciantly on a\u00a0crisp white tablecloth. We\u2019re talking, of course, about Marcello Mastroianni.<\/span><\/p>\n Wrapping up our <\/span>La Dolce Vita<\/span><\/a> partnership with Disaronno for their 500<\/span>-year anniversary*, we commissioned ace video editor and regular LWLies contributor Lu\u00eds Azevedo to create a\u00a0special tribute to Mastroianni\u2009\u2014\u2009an actor who, over the course of his glittering film career, always seemed to epitomize the notion of a\u00a0life lived beautifully.<\/span><\/p>\n In Marcello Mastroianni: A\u00a0Life Lived Beautifully, Azevedo explores how, as the go-to leading man for some of Italy\u2019s most revered filmmakers\u2009\u2014\u2009most notably Federico Fellini, for whom Mastroianni was as much alter ego as he was artistic muse\u2009\u2014\u2009Mastroianni became the defining face of Italian cinema during its \u200b\u2019<\/span>60<\/span>s and \u200b\u2019<\/span>70<\/span>s heyday. Indeed, his breakthrough role in Fellini\u2019s 1960<\/span> masterpiece\u00a0<\/span>La Dolce Vita<\/i> introduced audiences to a\u00a0romantic cosmopolitan ideal that endures to this\u00a0day.<\/span><\/p>\n Yet despite his iconic performances in other classics such as\u00a0<\/span>8<\/span>\u00bd<\/i><\/a> and\u00a0<\/span>La Notte<\/i><\/a>, Mastroianni\u2019s on-screen persona was a\u00a0lot more complex than his reputation as the undisputed king of cinematic cool suggests.
