This fea\u00adture is the third in our sum\u00admer series, <\/strong><\/i>La Dolce Vita: A\u00a0Cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion of Ital\u00adian Screen Style<\/strong><\/i><\/a>, in part\u00adner\u00adship with Disaronno.<\/strong><\/i><\/p>\n L<\/span>a Notte<\/span><\/i>, the mid\u00adpoint of Michelan\u00adge\u00adlo Antonioni\u2019s \u200b\u201c<\/span>alien\u00adation tril\u00ado\u00adgy\u201d, depicts an exis\u00adten\u00adtial cri\u00adsis that is only made more explic\u00adit by the film\u2019s gleam\u00ading sur\u00adface. This icon\u00adic 1961<\/span> film cap\u00adtures, over a\u00a0day and a\u00a0night in Milan, the death of a\u00a0mar\u00adriage, the dubi\u00adous rein\u00adven\u00adtion of a\u00a0city \u2013 and a\u00a0glimpse of the end of the\u00a0world.<\/span><\/p>\n Mar\u00adcel\u00adlo Mas\u00adtroian\u00adni plays Gio\u00advan\u00adni, a\u00a0suc\u00adcess\u00adful nov\u00adel\u00adist, appar\u00adent\u00adly implaca\u00adble, cool\u00adly kit\u00adted out in a\u00a0black suit and tie. Jeanne More\u00adau plays his dis\u00adil\u00adlu\u00adsioned wife, with a\u00a0ter\u00adri\u00adble thought she daren\u2019t express hov\u00ader\u00ading above her\u00a0head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The film starts when they vis\u00adit a\u00a0dying friend in hos\u00adpi\u00adtal: Tom\u00adma\u00adso (Bern\u00adhard Wic\u00adki) is a\u00a0lib\u00ader\u00adal writer who is far more polit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly com\u00admit\u00adted than Gio\u00advan\u00adni, and also in love with Lidia. For both hus\u00adband and wife he rep\u00adre\u00adsents the road not tak\u00aden, one that is now about to\u00a0close.<\/span><\/p>\n They return home to their sleek mod\u00adern apart\u00adment, vis\u00adit the run\u00addown streets where they lived as new\u00adly\u00adweds, attend a\u00a0book launch, vis\u00adit a\u00a0jazz club and final\u00adly join a\u00a0par\u00adty thrown by a\u00a0wealthy indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adist on the out\u00adskirts of the city. As the band plays on through the night, the cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adist wor\u00adries that his way of life is com\u00ading to an\u00a0end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ten\u00adsion, both sex\u00adu\u00adal and melan\u00adcholic, pulls at the air between Gio\u00advan\u00adni and Lidia, who drift through the city as the image of a\u00a0per\u00adfect cou\u00adple, while their mar\u00adriage shat\u00adters in their hands. Anto\u00adnioni cap\u00adtures the dis\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00aded lovers and their city in sleek, geo\u00admet\u00adric com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions, echo\u00ading the clean lines of their wardrobe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Those cos\u00adtumes are by Biki, the cou\u00adturi\u00ader best known for dress\u00ading the diva Maria Callas. Lidia\u2019s two out\u00adfits, the white sun\u00address and jack\u00adet print\u00aded with flow\u00aders, and the black cock\u00adtail dress with the flo\u00adral lace shrug form metic\u00adu\u00adlous neg\u00ada\u00adtive impres\u00adsions of each oth\u00ader. Hers is a\u00a0care\u00adful\u00adly cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded glam\u00adour (an old school\u00adfriend blunt\u00adly points out that she \u200b\u201c<\/span>used to be so plain\u201d), which reflects the con\u00adstruc\u00adtions of ele\u00adgance that dom\u00adi\u00adnate the film: the bour\u00adgeois par\u00adty, the mod\u00adernist apart\u00adment. She exists in the point where chic meets respectable class conformity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Point\u00aded\u00adly, the two women with whom Gio\u00advan\u00adni strays wear out\u00adfits that echo Lidia\u2019s. First embroi\u00addered flo\u00adrals on the long black gown worn by a\u00a0histri\u00adon\u00adic patient in the hos\u00adpi\u00adtal, then the chic black dress worn by an unsta\u00adble woman named Valenti\u00adna (Mon\u00adi\u00adca Vit\u00adti in a\u00a0brunette wig) at the par\u00adty. When Lidia removes her lace cape, the two women sud\u00adden\u00adly match, down to their short, dark hair. Lidia has anoint\u00aded her own successor.<\/span><\/p>\n As Tom\u00adma\u00adso says in his hos\u00adpi\u00adtal bed, \u200b\u201c<\/span>Some\u00adtimes beau\u00adty can be real\u00adly depress\u00ading.\u201d Their sophis\u00adti\u00adcat\u00aded world\u2019s fa\u00e7ade of ele\u00adgance is shown to be frag\u00adile, as for Lidia, life in the shad\u00adow of a\u00a0celebri\u00adty has drained her life of mean\u00ading. Out\u00adside their home, the archi\u00adtec\u00adtur\u00adal her\u00aditage of Milan is being swept away in favour of less sub\u00adstan\u00adtial replace\u00adments, includ\u00ading the couple\u2019s air\u00adless\u00a0flat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In an instant, a\u00a0show\u00ader of rain sends the par\u00adty guests scat\u00adter\u00ading: los\u00ading their poise, they throw them\u00adselves (in their design\u00ader gowns), into the swim\u00adming pool.
