In East Ger\u00admany, where direc\u00adtor Andreas Dresen grew up, Hilde and Hans Cop\u00adpi were talked about with the kind of rev\u00ader\u00adence nor\u00admal\u00adly reserved for saints. Mem\u00adbers of a\u00a0Com\u00admu\u00adnist Ger\u00adman resis\u00adtance group known as the Red Orches\u00adtra, which was work\u00ading to aid the Sovi\u00adet Union against the Nazis, Hilde and Hans were regard\u00aded more as sym\u00adbols of hero\u00adism rather than real peo\u00adple who lived and died for their cause. From Hilde, With Love<\/i> attempts to breathe life into the leg\u00adend that Dresen was brought up with, but this hand\u00adsome\u00adly craft\u00aded biopic is too staid to make a\u00a0last\u00ading impact.<\/p>\n
Hilde, played with qui\u00adet resilience by Baby\u00adlon Berlin<\/i>\u200b\u2019<\/span>s Liv Lisa Fries, is pick\u00ading straw\u00adber\u00adries when the Gestapo arrive to arrest her. The film begins as it goes on, with Hilde\u2019s idyl\u00adlic life with Hans (Johannes Hege\u00admann), all kiss\u00ading in sun\u00adlit gar\u00addens and har\u00adbour\u00ading Sovi\u00adet spies, jux\u00adta\u00adposed with the unmer\u00adci\u00adful real\u00adi\u00adty of the Third Reich. As she lan\u00adguish\u00ades in prison, where she endures an ago\u00adnis\u00ading child\u00adbirth, flash\u00adbacks reveal her falling in with this group of young Com\u00admu\u00adnists for whom resis\u00adtance is an adven\u00adture as well as a\u00a0duty. For Hilde, how\u00adev\u00ader, it\u2019s pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly an act of com\u00adpas\u00adsion; after hear\u00ading pleas from Ger\u00adman POWs via illic\u00adit Sovi\u00adet broad\u00adcasts she writes let\u00adters to their fam\u00adi\u00adlies, reas\u00adsur\u00ading them that their sons and hus\u00adbands are still alive. Dis\u00adcus\u00adsion of pol\u00adi\u00adtics is kept to a\u00a0bare minimum.<\/p>\n Every one of these flash\u00adbacks seems to take place on the most gor\u00adgeous summer\u2019s day imag\u00adin\u00adable. At times it\u2019s rather too beau\u00adti\u00adful, a \u200b\u201c<\/span>Vis\u00adit Ger\u00admany\u201d logo threat\u00aden\u00ading to appear at the end of anoth\u00ader sequence of cavort\u00ading by a\u00a0lake or speed\u00ading through the coun\u00adtry\u00adside on a\u00a0motor\u00adbike. A\u00a0much more sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant prob\u00adlem is that these flash\u00adbacks play out in nonchrono\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal order for no clear rea\u00adson. If it\u2019s a\u00a0vague stab at shak\u00ading up the biopic for\u00admu\u00adla it doesn\u2019t work; in prac\u00adtice it\u2019s need\u00adless\u00adly con\u00adfus\u00ading, and that the romance between reserved, slight\u00adly prud\u00adish Hilde and the dash\u00ading Hans feels gen\u00aduine is in spite of this nar\u00adra\u00adtive device. One par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly affect\u00ading mon\u00adtage fea\u00adtures Hans teach\u00ading Hilde Morse code by tap\u00adping his fin\u00adger on her body, whether on her naked back after sex or on her knee on the bus, a\u00a0secret lan\u00adguage of love that\u2019s also an act of rebellion.<\/p>\n To the film\u2019s cred\u00adit none of the Nazi char\u00adac\u00adters are so car\u00adtoon\u00adish\u00adly abhor\u00adrent as to divorce them from real\u00adi\u00adty. Some with\u00adin this sys\u00adtem, such as a\u00a0prison guard who helps Hilde appeal her sen\u00adtence, even show some human\u00adi\u00adty, mak\u00ading their active par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adtion in the r\u00e9gime all the more unset\u00adtling. In the cur\u00adrent cli\u00admate reject\u00ading com\u00adpla\u00adcen\u00adcy in the face of fas\u00adcism is a\u00a0more per\u00adti\u00adnent mes\u00adsage than ever, so while its end\u00ading is a\u00a0gut-punch it\u2019s a\u00a0shame that From Hilde, With Love<\/i> isn\u2019t the for\u00admal\u00adly bold, polit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly rad\u00adi\u00adcal film that the Cop\u00adpis deserve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nGet more Lit\u00adtle White\u00a0Lies<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
