I, on the oth\u00ader hand, was deter\u00admined to com\u00admit as much of my day to mem\u00ado\u00adry as I\u00a0could \u2013 and it was clear, as a\u00a0I arrived ear\u00adly at the venue, the Horse\u00adbridge Arts Cen\u00adtre, that oth\u00aders were of a\u00a0sim\u00adi\u00adlar mind; a\u00a0crowd was already gath\u00ader\u00ading, chat\u00adting over tea served up by No\u00ebl him\u00adself, and rub\u00adbing shoul\u00adders with guests includ\u00ading Cush\u00ading co-stars Melvyn Hayes and Car\u00ado\u00adline Munro. I\u2019ve writ\u00adten for Inter\u00admis\u00adsion and am a\u00a0reg\u00adu\u00adlar con\u00adtrib\u00adu\u00adtor to the TPTV<\/span> pod\u00adcast, so caught up with Sarah and Mel Byron, the Cronins\u2019 chief fac\u00adto\u00adtum. Then it was time for the day\u2019s action to\u00a0begin.<\/span><\/p>\n After a\u00a0brief intro\u00adduc\u00adtion, the 150<\/span> or so hard\u00adened Cush\u00ading fans heard from Hayes, Munro, and for\u00admer Ham\u00admer Films run\u00adners Phil Camp\u00adbell and Bri\u00adan Reynolds, who regaled us with tales of work\u00ading with the great man, but the most amaz\u00ading sto\u00adries came from Geof\u00adfrey Hugh\u00ades, whose father sold their fam\u00adi\u00adly home to Peter and his wife Helen in the 1950<\/span>s. The Hugh\u00ades clan moved a\u00a0few doors away, but remained friends with the cou\u00adple; Geof\u00adfrey and his sib\u00adlings appear to have been sur\u00adro\u00adgate nephews and nieces to the Cush\u00adings, who were unable to have chil\u00addren of their own. Peter treat\u00aded them to gifts from the local toy shop and encour\u00adaged their hob\u00adbies. I\u00a0once inter\u00adviewed the actor William Franklyn about his work with Cush\u00ading. He told me his daugh\u00adters nick\u00adnamed him St Peter; if the tales recalled here are any\u00adthing to go by, it was rather fitting.<\/span><\/p>\n After\u00adwards, we watched\u00a0<\/span>The Curse of Franken\u00adstein\u00a0<\/i>(1957<\/span>), the film that began the actor\u2019s long asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion with Hammer\u2019s goth\u00adic hor\u00adrors, before a\u00a0brief lunch. The fun con\u00adtin\u00adued after\u00adwards; like kids on a\u00a0school trip, we were split into four groups, each tak\u00ading it in turn to tack\u00adle var\u00adi\u00adous activ\u00adi\u00adties. For me, it began with a\u00a0guid\u00aded tour of some Cush\u00ading hotspots with com\u00ade\u00addy his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan Andre Vin\u00adcent. He admit\u00adted he wasn\u2019t an expert in his sub\u00adject, but in a\u00a0way, that might have been an advan\u00adtage \u2013 he real\u00adly had to have done his home\u00adwork, \u200b\u2018<\/span>wing\u00ading it\u2019 would not do for the audi\u00adence of ardent Cush\u00ading fans. Nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless, he did miss out the Tudor Tea Rooms, the actor\u2019s favourite eatery.<\/span><\/p>\n What we did see, how\u00adev\u00ader, was Cushing\u2019s View, a\u00a0spot look\u00ading out to sea towards the Maun\u00adsell forts in the dis\u00adtance. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, a\u00a0cou\u00adple were sit\u00adting on the bench donat\u00aded by the Cush\u00adings and stead\u00adfast\u00adly refused to move, despite 30<\/span> pairs of glow\u00ader\u00ading eyes bor\u00ading into their souls. (Vin\u00adcent had ear\u00adli\u00ader described the local folk as res\u00adolute and they were proof of that.) Cushing\u2019s beach\u00adfront house, com\u00adplete with its top-flight art stu\u00addio, was also fea\u00adtured, along with places he would vis\u00adit, such as the local golf course (to admire the view rather than play), as well as the local Wether\u00adspoons pub \u2013 a\u00a0for\u00admer cin\u00ade\u00adma now called The Peter Cushing.<\/span><\/p>\n It was then time to watch a\u00a01992<\/span> inter\u00adview, car\u00adried out by jour\u00adnal\u00adist Peter Williams (who was present to dis\u00adcuss the show) for his TV<\/span> series\u00a0<\/span>The Human Fac\u00adtor<\/i>, in which Cush\u00ading dis\u00adcuss\u00ades his spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal side as well as his love for his wife, who by then had been gone for over 20<\/span>\u00a0years.<\/span><\/p>\n A trip to the local muse\u00adum fol\u00adlowed, where a\u00a0plucky band of vol\u00adun\u00adteers proud\u00adly show\u00adcased their exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion devot\u00aded to the local hero, includ\u00ading his bicy\u00adcle, his art equip\u00adment (Cush\u00ading was a\u00a0skilled water\u00adcolourist) and a\u00a0cos\u00adtume from\u00a0<\/span>The Masks of Death<\/i> (1984<\/span>), his final out\u00ading as Sher\u00adlock Holmes. Then it was back to the Horse\u00adbridge for the last event: a\u00a0Cush\u00ading quiz. I\u2019m proud to say I\u00a0won.<\/span><\/p>\n After a\u00a0quick catch-up with Mel, in which we mused on what Cush\u00ading would have thought of all the fuss (we decid\u00aded he would have been touched, embar\u00adrassed and sur\u00adprised), I\u00a0was back on the train to St Pan\u00adcras, pass\u00ading some of the Charl\u00adton fans going in the oppo\u00adsite direc\u00adtion. They were jubi\u00adlant, hav\u00ading won the match and there\u00adfore pro\u00admo\u00adtion to the Cham\u00adpi\u00adonship next season.<\/span><\/p>\n They can\u2019t pos\u00adsi\u00adbly have been as hap\u00adpy as me, how\u00adev\u00ader. I\u00a0mean, I\u00a0spent the day \u200b\u2018<\/span>with\u2019 my hero, and then topped it off by win\u00adning some cake.
