With his rumi\u00adna\u00adtive lat\u00adest, <i>The Shrouds<\/i>, Cro\u00adnen\u00adberg once more makes a\u00a0play for the heart\u00adstrings in what must be one of the most naked\u00adly mov\u00ading and rev\u00ade\u00adla\u00adto\u00adry films with\u00adin his\u00a0canon.<\/p>\n<p>There is, of course, a\u00a0lot of iron\u00adic lev\u00adi\u00adty too, as seen in an open\u00ading sequence in which melan\u00adcholy wid\u00adowed tech mag\u00adnate, Karsh (Vin\u00adcent Cas\u00adsell, made up to look exact\u00adly like the film\u00admak\u00ader), decides to dive into the dat\u00ading scene once more, organ\u00adis\u00ading a\u00a0lunch with a\u00a0match for\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded by his den\u00adtist in a\u00a0restau\u00adrant that\u2019s adja\u00adcent to a\u00a0grave\u00adyard. The joke is, it\u2019s his restau\u00adrant. And his grave\u00adyard. And what\u2019s more, his late wife, Bec\u00adci, is buried there \u2013 would you, dear date, like to come and see her decay\u00ading corpse in <span class=\"caps\"><span class=\"numbers\">8<\/span>K<\/span> res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion via live-relay videofeed?<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-10 bg-[var(--color-background-accent)] font-primary text-[16px] font-bold rounded-[16px] p-8\">\n<h3 class=\"!mb-4 text-[24px]\">Get more Lit\u00adtle White\u00a0Lies<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Karsh is the founder of GraveTech, a\u00a0com\u00adpa\u00adny who have, in tan\u00addem with a\u00a0Chi\u00adnese firm named Shin\u00ading Cloth, devel\u00adoped a\u00a0new type of bur\u00adial shroud which allows the bereaved to be in con\u00adstant con\u00adtact with the recent\u00adly depart\u00aded. Ever the roman\u00adtic, Karsh is just itch\u00ading to dive into his plot next to Bec\u00adci so they may enter the eter\u00adnal rest togeth\u00ader, but in the mean\u00adtime, he\u2019s can zoom in on her des\u00adic\u00adcat\u00ading skull and won\u00adder\u00ading what those lit\u00adtle nod\u00adules grow\u00ading on her bones might\u00a0be.<\/p>\n<p>Explo\u00adrations of grief on film are ten a\u00a0pen\u00adny and so often lean on maudlin sen\u00adti\u00adment to achieve their intend\u00aded goal. <i>The Shrouds<\/i> offers some\u00adthing that\u2019s at once more nuanced, more com\u00adplex and more rad\u00adi\u00adcal, as Karsh finds him\u00adself hav\u00ading to deal with the fact that some\u00adone may be sab\u00ado\u00adtag\u00ading his sys\u00adtem to use it as a\u00a0sur\u00adveil\u00adlance tool, some\u00adthing one of his oper\u00ada\u00adtives and ex-broth\u00ader-in-law Mau\u00adry (Guy Pearce) may have a\u00a0hand in. This cen\u00adtral con\u00adceit of man attempt\u00ading to dis\u00adcov\u00ader the prove\u00adnance of strange broad\u00adcast images and being swept into a\u00a0world of polit\u00adi\u00adcal intrigue is a\u00a0ful\u00adsome call-back to <span class=\"numbers\">1983<\/span>\u2019s <i>Video\u00addrome<\/i>, and as a\u00a0film about a\u00a0husband\u2019s con\u00adspir\u00ada\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal obses\u00adsions with his dead wife, there\u2019s quite a\u00a0bit of <span class=\"numbers\">1991<\/span>\u2019s <i>Naked Lunch<\/i> in there\u00a0too.<\/p>\n<p>On a\u00a0pro\u00adduc\u00adtion lev\u00adel, this is just pre\u00adci\u00adsion film\u00admak\u00ading of the high\u00adest stripe, and there\u2019s a\u00a0heart\u00adbeat-like rhythm to both the syn\u00adtax and syn\u00adco\u00adpa\u00adtions of the dia\u00adlogue, and the beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly judged shot\/\u200breverse shot edits. Howard Shore deliv\u00aders anoth\u00ader one of his gor\u00adgeous synth scores, this one with an apt\u00adly fune\u00adre\u00adal vibe, and long-time pro\u00adduc\u00adtion design\u00ader Car\u00adol Spi\u00ader threads the nee\u00addle between a\u00a0world of pris\u00adtine mod\u00adern inno\u00adva\u00adtion, and Japan\u00adese minimalism.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Shrouds<\/i> is a\u00a0new type of cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic love sto\u00adry, one that deals with our abid\u00ading con\u00adnec\u00adtion with the dead through dreams and real\u00adis\u00adtic inno\u00adva\u00adtion rather than hav\u00ading to lean on such time\u00adworn crutch\u00ades as ghosts and fan\u00adta\u00adsy.
