There is exact\u00adly one bril\u00adliant moment in Col\u00adin Trevorrow\u2019s Juras\u00adsic World: a\u00a0teenage boy named Zach (Nick Robin\u00adson) strolls through the T\u2011Rex exhib\u00adit at the epony\u00admous amuse\u00adment park, just one of the 20<\/span>,000<\/span> vis\u00adi\u00adtors who will pass through the trop\u00adi\u00adcal tourist attrac\u00adtion that day. His phone rings; it\u2019s his mom call\u00ading, and she wants to have a\u00a0typ\u00adi\u00adcal mom conversation.<\/p>\n As Zach turns his back to the view\u00ading win\u00addow in order to hear the voice on the oth\u00ader end of the line, the sin\u00adgle most icon\u00adic film crea\u00adture of the last 25<\/span>\u00a0years loud\u00adly wad\u00addles through the back\u00adground with an ancient roar. The crowd coos, doing their best to con\u00advince each oth\u00ader that they\u2019ve just seen some\u00adthing awe\u00adsome, but Zach doesn\u2019t even flinch. The spec\u00adta\u00adcle is about as excit\u00ading to him as last year\u2019s Christ\u00admas presents.<\/p>\n Zach, of course, is meant to be our proxy, as jad\u00aded to mad sci\u00aden\u00adtist mar\u00advels of bio\u00adengi\u00adneer\u00ading as we sup\u00adpos\u00aded\u00adly are to the won\u00adders of spe\u00adcial effects. And it\u2019s true that the sight of Stan Winston\u2019s ani\u00adma\u00adtron\u00adic mas\u00adter\u00adpiece (or its rean\u00adi\u00admat\u00aded CGI<\/span> incar\u00adna\u00adtion) doesn\u2019t inspire the same awe that it did when it first stomped over the wire fence of its orig\u00adi\u00adnal pad\u00addock in 1993<\/span>. That sense of inure\u00adment is at the heart of the cyn\u00adi\u00adcal Juras\u00adsic World, which has been mis\u00adtak\u00aden\u00adly described as a\u00a0reboot of Juras\u00adsic Park \u2013 it\u2019s tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly a\u00a0direct sequel, but it would be more accu\u00adrate to describe it as a\u00a0mis\u00adbe\u00adgot\u00adten reckoning.<\/p>\n More than two decades after John Hammond\u2019s beta test implod\u00aded in grand fash\u00adion, his dream has been realised and then some. Isla Nublar is now dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded by a\u00a0theme park that makes Dis\u00adney\u00adland look like a\u00a0street fair, the dinosaurs inhab\u00adit\u00ading a\u00a0cor\u00adpo\u00adrate par\u00adadise criss\u00adcrossed by mono\u00adrails and over\u00adrun with fam\u00adi\u00adlies of tourists \u2013 there\u2019s even a\u00a0Star\u00adbucks (hell, there\u2019s even a\u00a0Mar\u00adgar\u00adi\u00adtaville with Jim\u00admy Buf\u00adfett him\u00adself serv\u00ading drinks). Once upon a\u00a0time, the sci\u00adence required the mon\u00adey. Now, the mon\u00adey requires the sci\u00adence. Life funds a\u00a0way.<\/p>\n The heart of Michael Crichton\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal nov\u00adel was about how dis\u00adcov\u00adery and won\u00adder are inevitably infect\u00aded by busi\u00adness, and Juras\u00adsic World begins with the tail wag\u00adging the dinosaur so vig\u00ador\u00adous\u00adly that they need to invent a\u00a0mon\u00adster big enough to stay on its\u00a0feet.<\/p>\n In order to sati\u00adate the pub\u00adlic and keep them com\u00ading back for more, InGen is com\u00adpelled to cre\u00adate a\u00a0new attrac\u00adtion every few years \u2013 as Claire (Bryce Dal\u00adlas Howard), the park\u2019s worka\u00adholic oper\u00ada\u00adtional man\u00adag\u00ader, puts it: \u200b\u201c<\/span>No one\u2019s impressed by dinosaurs any\u00admore.\u201d And Claire is right. One hun\u00addred years ago, audi\u00adences were (apoc\u00adryphal\u00adly) aston\u00adished and ter\u00adri\u00adfied by the sight of a\u00a0train pulling into a\u00a0sta\u00adtion. Ear\u00adli\u00ader this sum\u00admer this writer near\u00adly fell asleep watch\u00ading an inter\u00adgalac\u00adtic team of super\u00adheroes try to defeat an army of robots and pre\u00advent a\u00a0falling city from crash\u00ading to Earth and trig\u00adger\u00ading an extinc\u00adtion lev\u00adel\u00a0event.<\/p>\n Enter Indomi\u00adnus Rex. The company\u2019s lat\u00adest and most colos\u00adsal\u00adly ill-advised idea is larg\u00ader than a\u00a0T\u2011Rex, twice as blood\u00adthirsty, and spliced with all sorts of fun new tricks. Need\u00adless to say, the ghost of J\u00a0Robert Oppen\u00adheimer is rolling his eyes long before Indomi\u00adnus slips out of her pen and pro\u00adceeds to run amok, destroy\u00ading the park\u2019s infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and eat\u00ading all of its prized attractions.<\/p>\n As the main event of this crea\u00adture fea\u00adture, Indomi\u00adnus Rex com\u00adplete\u00adly fails to cap\u00adture the imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. As a\u00a0car\u00adniv\u00ado\u00adrous metaphor for the dan\u00adgers of con\u00adfus\u00ading big\u00adger with bet\u00adter, she\u2019s only slight\u00adly more suc\u00adcess\u00adful (the movie\u2019s most intrigu\u00ading new dinosaur is the aquat\u00adic Mosasaurus, a\u00a0weight\u00adless CGI<\/span> cre\u00adation that nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless remains sub\u00admerged for just long enough to tap into our col\u00adlec\u00adtive fear of what lies beneath). This test tube behe\u00admoth isn\u2019t just an expres\u00adsion of a\u00a0cre\u00adative\u00adly bank\u00adrupt cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic cul\u00adture, she\u2019s also a\u00a0client.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n Trevorrow\u2019s block\u00adbuster, despite flirt\u00ading with 22<\/span> Jump Street lev\u00adels of wink\u00ading self-reflex\u00adiv\u00adi\u00adty, lacks the vision or ambi\u00adtion to do any\u00adthing more than diag\u00adnose a\u00a0sick\u00adness that it\u2019s pow\u00ader\u00adless to cure. Its action sequences are blood\u00adless and unex\u00adcit\u00ading, and the theme park\u2019s attrac\u00adtions \u2013 like the gyro\u00adscopes tourists use to roam the grounds, the most implau\u00adsi\u00adble thing in a\u00a0movie that fea\u00adtures Vin\u00adcent D\u2019Onofrio plot\u00adting to use Veloci\u00adrap\u00adtors to hunt ISIS<\/span> \u2013 are trans\u00adpar\u00adent\u00adly reverse engi\u00adneered for their abil\u00adi\u00adty to moti\u00advate a\u00a0set piece. As Juras\u00adsic World gets big\u00adger, it only gets worse. Not since Spike Jonze\u2019s Adap\u00adta\u00adtion has a\u00a0movie so glee\u00adful\u00adly become the thing it resents most.<\/p>\n In Juras\u00adsic Park, the pre\u00adhis\u00adtoric lizards were onscreen for a\u00a0grand total of 15<\/span>\u00a0min\u00adutes, which left the human char\u00adac\u00adters to do much of the heavy lift\u00ading. In the sequels, how\u00adev\u00ader, the peo\u00adple have become dis\u00adtrac\u00adtions defined by their blun\u00adders, and Juras\u00adsic World \u2013 despite fea\u00adtur\u00ading the most series\u2019 most charis\u00admat\u00adic cast since the orig\u00adi\u00adnal film \u2013 is all too eager to keep that tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00a0alive.<\/p>\n Claire is fun to watch, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly when the movie allows her to run with its goofi\u00adest set piece (in high heels). As a\u00a0strong woman who\u2019s forced to con\u00adfront her mis\u00adtak\u00aden pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adties, Howard does a\u00a0decent job of mud\u00addy\u00ading arche\u00adtypes in a\u00a0film that defaults to them far too often. But the Amblin logo real\u00adly only means one thing: Kids are about to be in dan\u00adger, and Trevor\u00adrow makes sure to put Zach and his excitable younger broth\u00ader in plen\u00adty of\u00a0it.<\/p>\n Nei\u00adther of the youths is as annoy\u00ading as fran\u00adchise vet\u00ader\u00adans have come to expect, but the fact that the boys are Claire\u2019s nephews nev\u00ader feels like any\u00adthing more than an excuse to dove\u00adtail their plots togeth\u00ader. Like\u00adwise, the detail that Claire hasn\u2019t seen them in sev\u00aden years because she\u2019s been too busy with her career, or that Zach\u2019s par\u00adents may (or may not?) be divorc\u00ading, is even less impor\u00adtant to the sto\u00adry than the plant-eat\u00ading dinosaurs.<\/p>\n Alas, Juras\u00adsic World has a\u00a0habit of giv\u00ading the most atten\u00adtion to its least inter\u00adest\u00ading com\u00adpo\u00adnents. Trevor\u00adrow so des\u00adper\u00adate\u00adly wants Claire to be his most inte\u00adgral human, but the movie can\u2019t help but dote on Owen (Chris Pratt), the rogu\u00adish Veloci\u00adrap\u00adtor train\u00ader who\u2019s con\u00adscript\u00aded into sub\u00addu\u00ading the ram\u00adpag\u00ading Indomi\u00adnus. A\u00a0light\u00adning rod for idi\u00adot\u00adic sub\u00adplots, Owen is a\u00a0rogu\u00adish\u00adly hand\u00adsome wet blan\u00adket with a\u00a0strange accent and a\u00a0very dan\u00adger\u00adous job. Also, he has a\u00a0pack of Veloci\u00adrap\u00adtors who effec\u00adtive\u00adly think he\u2019s their dad\u00addy, and by the end of the movie they\u2019ll be deployed to try and ride into bat\u00adtle with\u00a0him.<\/p>\n It used to be that the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion of pow\u00ader from one grade of spec\u00adta\u00adcle to the next was a\u00a0vio\u00adlent func\u00adtion of the block\u00adbuster food chain \u2013 in Juras\u00adsic Park III<\/span>, the Spin\u00adosaurus had to fight and kill a\u00a0T\u2011Rex in order to win our atten\u00adtion. But now, it\u2019s sim\u00adply assumed that the big new thing is supe\u00adri\u00ador because it\u2019s big and new, a\u00a0self-ful\u00adfill\u00ading prophe\u00adcy that Trevorrow\u2019s film milks for 100<\/span>\u00a0min\u00adutes only to insin\u00adcere\u00adly reject dur\u00ading a\u00a0cli\u00admac\u00adtic scene that preys on the audience\u2019s nos\u00adtal\u00adgia. It\u2019s a\u00a0fit\u00adting res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion for a\u00a0movie that believes audi\u00adences are the prob\u00adlem (rather than just a\u00a0part of it), and that the stu\u00addios are to be pitied for hav\u00ading to be at their\u00a0mercy.<\/p>\n The scene of Zach ignor\u00ading the T\u2011Rex may be a\u00a0clever illus\u00adtra\u00adtion of how yesterday\u2019s mar\u00advel can become today\u2019s white noise, but Trevor\u00adrow gets one thing ter\u00adri\u00adbly wrong about it: the T\u2011Rex isn\u2019t bor\u00ading because we\u2019ve seen it before, it\u2019s bor\u00ading because it\u2019s in cap\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty.
