Like a\u00a0rabid zom\u00adbie with a\u00a0wan\u00adton desire to gorge mind\u00adless\u00adly on its prey, film\u00admak\u00ader Dan\u00adny Boyle has got a\u00a0bloody sweet tooth for nos\u00adtal\u00adgia late\u00adly. From pub\u00adlicly despoil\u00ading a\u00a0cop\u00adper-bot\u00adtomed cult clas\u00adsic for cringey call-back kicks (<\/span>Trainspot\u00adting 2<\/span><\/i>), to appeas\u00ading the \u200b\u201c<\/span>gold\u201d radio crowd (<\/span>Yes\u00adter\u00adday<\/i>) and refram\u00ading the punk era as a\u00a0dress\u00ading-up box far\u00adra\u00adgo (TV<\/span> series\u00a0<\/span>Pis\u00adtol<\/i>), he\u2019s drawn heed\u00adless\u00adly to the amber glow of youth and hap\u00adpi\u00ader, more fruit\u00adful times of days yonder.<\/span><\/p>\n You might deduce a\u00a0hint of auto\u00adbi\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy, then, in his new film\u00a0<\/span>28<\/span> Years Lat\u00ader<\/i>, which intro\u00adduces a\u00a0closed soci\u00adety of Northum\u00adbri\u00adan island dwellers who have expe\u00adri\u00adenced no tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal or social evo\u00adlu\u00adtion since the ini\u00adtial out\u00adbreak of the Rage virus that was doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded in 2002<\/span>\u2019s frisky genre hit,\u00a0<\/span>28<\/span> Days Lat\u00ader<\/i>. A\u00a0benign form of social\u00adism has tak\u00aden over, and this close-knit group of sur\u00advivors have been able to sub\u00adsist and per\u00adsist via col\u00adlec\u00adtive endeav\u00adour and unself\u00adcon\u00adscious empa\u00adthy, shar\u00ading food and sup\u00adplies and embrac\u00ading a\u00a0lev\u00adel of full-tilt social equal\u00adi\u00adty that would have a\u00a0Tory grandee scoff\u00ading into his kedgeree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The British main\u00adland, mean\u00adwhile, has been left to fes\u00adter, now a\u00a0glob\u00adal no-go ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry and under strict quar\u00adan\u00adtine from Europe (sound famil\u00adiar?). While many of the infect\u00aded have also suc\u00adcumbed to the rav\u00adages of time, some have also evolved into a\u00a0super\u00adcharged breed that, with their non-ver\u00adbal yowl\u00ading and dis\u00adtaste for cloth\u00ading, resem\u00adble a\u00a0new iter\u00ada\u00adtion of pre-his\u00adtoric man. And lead\u00ading the packs are the dan\u00adger\u00adous new \u200b\u201c<\/span>alpha\u201d vari\u00adants, immune to the slings and arrows of the islanders and appar\u00adent\u00adly the prod\u00aduct of steroids present in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal strain.<\/span><\/p>\n Where the orig\u00adi\u00adnal film leached on the bleed\u00ading edge aes\u00adthet\u00adics of the Dogme 95<\/span> move\u00adment, with its use of con\u00adsumer grade dig\u00adi\u00adtal cam\u00aderas to immerse us in all the blood-vom\u00adit\u00ading detail of the urban apoc\u00ada\u00adlypse, this new one opts for a\u00a0mix of clas\u00adsi\u00adcal high def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion vis\u00adtas as best to empha\u00adsise the bucol\u00adic splen\u00addor of north\u00adern Eng\u00adland. Yet there\u2019s still great glee tak\u00aden in hav\u00ading us mon\u00adi\u00adtor the explo\u00adsive exit wounds caused by arrows hit\u00adting their tar\u00adgets direct\u00adly in the\u00a0face.<\/span><\/p>\n The sto\u00adry fol\u00adlows 12<\/span>-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams) whose lov\u00ading, bur\u00adley pops Jamie (Aaron Tay\u00adlor-John\u00adson) is mak\u00ading him an extra large fry-up this morn\u00ading, as he\u2019s head\u00ading to the main\u00adland for his first for\u00adag\u00ading mis\u00adsion. Upstairs, his ail\u00ading mum Isla (Jodie Com\u00ader) writhes around in bed, suf\u00adfer\u00ading from an ill\u00adness that no-one can diag\u00adnose or assist with, as there is no-one with med\u00adical train\u00ading on the island.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With\u00adout going into too much detail, the film is as fer\u00advent in its love for the NHS<\/span> and socialised med\u00adical pro\u00advi\u00adsion as was Boyle\u2019s 2012<\/span> Olympic open\u00ading cer\u00ade\u00admo\u00adny, prais\u00ading the pres\u00adence of doc\u00adtors even when they don\u2019t have the tools to help those who are suf\u00adfer\u00ading. And it also offers a\u00a0sting\u00ading cri\u00adtique of all those who active\u00adly yearn for the halt of progress, and what we see here is the hor\u00adri\u00adble upshot of what a\u00a0coun\u00adtry would look like if indeed the clocks were to grind to a\u00a0halt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The first half of the film sees Spike and Jamie tooled up and ready to do bat\u00adtle with the infect\u00aded, while the sec\u00adond focus\u00ades on the son\u2019s attempts to find some relief for his moth\u00ader. There are a\u00a0num\u00adber of ref\u00ader\u00adences and influ\u00adences at play, includ\u00ading fan\u00adta\u00adsy fran\u00adchise build\u00ading like The Hunger Games movies, and some of the more out\u00adr\u00e9 mod\u00adern folk hor\u00adror offer\u00adings, such as those by Ben Wheat\u00adley. Screen\u00adwriter Alex Gar\u00adland is some\u00adone who has been vocal in his love and respect for mod\u00adern video games, and the dynam\u00adic here, with the insis\u00adtent\u00adly pater\u00adnal father clash\u00ading with the rebel\u00adlious son, feels like an homage to the 2018<\/span> title <\/span>God of War<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n There are lit\u00adtle sug\u00adges\u00adtions of alle\u00adgo\u00adry and satire in the mix, but Gar\u00adland has this time man\u00adaged to find a\u00a0nice sweet spot where mean\u00ading and mes\u00adsage don\u2019t choke the sto\u00adry as a\u00a0whole. Boyle, mean\u00adwhile, shows us some of the old mag\u00adic in the var\u00adi\u00adous action set pieces, espe\u00adcial\u00adly the ones where the alpha and its mighty, swing\u00ading mem\u00adber become involved. Tonal\u00adly, the film is all over the shop, but nev\u00ader to the point where things don\u2019t feel flu\u00adid or coher\u00adent. Anachro\u00adnism is used for humour, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly in a\u00a0cli\u00admac\u00adtic scene which, for this view\u00ader, might be con\u00adsid\u00adered one of the most jaw-drop\u00adping and bold in recent mem\u00ado\u00adry. A\u00a0mic-drop moment\u00a0<\/span>par excel\u00adlence<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s a\u00a0film which man\u00adages to have its daft thrills and con\u00advinc\u00ading\u00adly piv\u00adot to wist\u00adful philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal intro\u00adspec\u00adtion, and while there are cer\u00adtain\u00adly some rough edges and unex\u00adplored plot avenues, it prob\u00ada\u00adbly counts as one of Boyle\u2019s strongest works this cen\u00adtu\u00adry.
