By any rea\u00adson\u00adable met\u00adric or mea\u00adsure, it remains a\u00a0sim\u00adple and immutable truth: men are class. And yes, dudes do, in fact,\u00a0rock.<\/span><\/p>\n This is the most log\u00adi\u00adcal and self-evi\u00addent con\u00adclu\u00adsion to draw from <\/span>F1<\/span><\/span>: The Movie<\/span><\/i>, a\u00a0tur\u00adbo-charged Dad Movie <\/span>par excel\u00adlence<\/span><\/i> in which Brad Pitt\u2019s star in an unrea\u00adson\u00adably priced car proves that some\u00adtimes the old ways are the best. Pitt plays Son\u00adny Hayes, a\u00a0one\u00adtime For\u00admu\u00adla One prodi\u00adgy turned world-weary rent-a-wheel\u00adman, who is lured out of retire\u00adment for one last ride by his old friend and for\u00admer team\u00admate Ruben Cer\u00advantes (Javier Bar\u00addem), now the own\u00ader of the strug\u00adgling APXGP<\/span>\u00a0team.<\/span><\/p>\n Hayes is brought in to men\u00adtor the team\u2019s num\u00adber-one dri\u00adver, Joshua Pearce (Dam\u00adson Idris), a\u00a0promis\u00ading rook\u00adie whose F1<\/span><\/span> career is in dan\u00adger of stalling before it has real\u00adly begun. But it\u2019s not long before Hayes starts assert\u00ading his alpha male\u00adness all over the team garage, charm\u00ading the pants (lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly, in one case) off every\u00adone from the mechan\u00adics to the press offi\u00adcer to the most influ\u00aden\u00adtial mem\u00adber of the board. Every\u00adone, that is, except Pearce, whose eager\u00adness to best his new de fac\u00adto rival will have dis\u00adas\u00adtrous con\u00adse\u00adquences \u2013 not just for him, but for the entire team.<\/span><\/p>\n Direc\u00adtor Joseph Kosin\u00ads\u00adki and screen\u00adwriter Ehren Kruger, who pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrat\u00aded on 2022<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>Top Gun: Mav\u00ader\u00adick<\/span><\/i>, are reunit\u00aded here to sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adly earnest, chest-thump\u00ading effect. Aside from a\u00a0few brief glimpses into Pearce\u2019s home life and a\u00a0some\u00adwhat laboured roman\u00adtic sub\u00adplot between Hayes and Ker\u00adry Condon\u2019s Kate McKen\u00adna (hailed as F1<\/span><\/span>\u2019s first female tech\u00adni\u00adcal direc\u00adtor), their script most\u00adly cuts to the chase \u2013 which is handy for a\u00a0film whose run\u00adtime exceeds the aver\u00adage length of an F1<\/span><\/span> race. Kosin\u00ads\u00adki and Kruger know exact\u00adly what their audi\u00adence wants: dar\u00ading over\u00adtakes, late break\u00ading, sparks fly\u00ading, spec\u00adtac\u00adu\u00adlar crash\u00ades \u2013 and lots of\u00a0it.<\/span><\/p>\n Indeed, the mid\u00addle por\u00adtion of the film plays out like an extend\u00aded rac\u00ading mon\u00adtage, the action furi\u00adous\u00adly jump\u00ading from cir\u00adcuit to cir\u00adcuit \u2013 Spa, Mon\u00adza, Las Vegas, Suzu\u00adka \u2013 as Hayes and Pearce begin steadi\u00adly work\u00ading their way up the grid. They are aid\u00aded by a\u00a0chas\u00adsis upgrade, devel\u00adoped by McKen\u00adna and designed to let them dri\u00adve through dirty air, and some good old-fash\u00adioned race\u00adcraft. The reck\u00adless tac\u00adtics and brazen skull\u00addug\u00adgery employed by Hayes are car\u00adried off with a\u00a0know\u00ading wink and a\u00a0toothy grin, but are also plain\u00adly ludi\u00adcrous \u2013 to the extent you may end up park\u00ading your sus\u00adpen\u00adsion of dis\u00adbe\u00adlief. Still, when the results are this thrilling, it seems churl\u00adish to nit\u00adpick about such fan\u00adci\u00adful nar\u00adra\u00adtive manoeuvres.<\/span><\/p>\n Made with the full back\u00ading of the sport\u2019s omnipo\u00adtent gov\u00adern\u00ading body, the FIA<\/span>, many key scenes were filmed dur\u00ading the 2023<\/span> and 2024<\/span> British Grand Prix events, with Pitt and Idris dri\u00adving adapt\u00aded For\u00admu\u00adla Two cars in between actu\u00adal prac\u00adtice ses\u00adsions. The footage cap\u00adtured over those week\u00adends \u2013 par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly the in-car, first-per\u00adson POV<\/span> shots \u2013 is aston\u00adish\u00ading. Unless you\u2019ve dri\u00adven in F1<\/span><\/span> pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly, this is as close as you\u2019re ever like\u00adly to get to the feel\u00ading of hit\u00adting 200<\/span> mph down Silvestone\u2019s icon\u00adic Hangar Straight.<\/span><\/p>\n Yet the FIA<\/span>\u2019s involve\u00adment also means that, even more than the strong smell of Brut, burnt rub\u00adber and testos\u00adterone, the film has the unmis\u00adtak\u00adable whiff of an expen\u00adsive, sani\u00adtised PR<\/span> exer\u00adcise. Sev\u00ader\u00adal real-life big names from the For\u00admu\u00adla One pad\u00addock \u2013 includ\u00ading reign\u00ading World Cham\u00adpi\u00adon Max Ver\u00adstap\u00adpen, sev\u00aden-time champ Lewis Hamil\u00adton (who also has a\u00a0pro\u00adduc\u00ader cred\u00adit on the film) and team prin\u00adci\u00adpals such as Mer\u00adcedes\u2019 Toto Wolff and Ferrari\u2019s Fred Vasseur \u2013 appear in back\u00adground cameo roles as them\u00adselves. Not to men\u00adtion a\u00a0num\u00adber of offi\u00adcials and even a\u00a0few state dignitaries.<\/span><\/p>\n For added authen\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adty, the GP<\/span> scenes are accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by broad\u00adcast\u00ading stal\u00adwarts David Croft and Mar\u00adtin Brun\u00addle, whose inces\u00adsant expo\u00adsi\u00adtion\u00adal com\u00admen\u00adtary is like\u00adly to grate on sea\u00adsoned fans, but should help casu\u00adal view\u00aders grasp the fin\u00ader details of what is an extreme\u00adly tech\u00adni\u00adcal sport. What is miss\u00ading \u2013 albeit under\u00adstand\u00adably \u2013 is any attempt to grap\u00adple with the eth\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsies sur\u00adround\u00ading For\u00admu\u00adla One, from accu\u00adsa\u00adtions of sports\u00adwash\u00ading to con\u00adcerns about its envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal impact, work\u00adplace mis\u00adcon\u00adduct, and per\u00adson\u00adal alle\u00adga\u00adtions made against var\u00adi\u00adous senior fig\u00adures with\u00adin the sport and its par\u00adent organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n All top\u00adics wor\u00adthy of wider dis\u00adcus\u00adsion, but per\u00adhaps not in a\u00a0film like this \u2013 where speed is king and sub\u00adtle\u00adty is yel\u00adlow-flagged; where cold real\u00adi\u00adty fin\u00adish\u00ades a\u00a0dis\u00adtant sec\u00adond to the white-hot fan\u00adta\u00adsy of a\u00a0glob\u00adal prod\u00aduct that, as evi\u00addenced by Netflix\u2019s wild\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlar docu\u00add\u00adra\u00adma <\/span>Dri\u00adve to Sur\u00advive<\/span><\/i>, is engi\u00adneered to con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly fuel its own hype machine.
