If a\u00a0charm\u00ading stranger asked you to get off the train with them in a\u00a0for\u00adeign city, would you? Let\u2019s say this hap\u00adpened in the sum\u00admer when you\u2019re on hol\u00adi\u00adday, and you\u2019re young and full of wild belief that mag\u00adi\u00adcal things hap\u00adpen all the time \u2013 so why\u00a0not?<\/p>\n
On 16<\/span>th<\/sup> June 2025<\/span>, known as \u200b\u2018<\/span>Before Sun\u00adrise<\/i> Day\u2019 among fans, it will be 30<\/span>\u00a0years since a\u00a0charmed encounter just like this took place on a\u00a0train rolling into Vien\u00adna. Before Sun\u00adrise<\/i><\/a> is an extreme case of the out-of-time encounter, as Jesse (Ethan Hawke) per\u00adsuades C\u00e9line (Julie Delpy) to get off the train they\u2019re both on, to walk around togeth\u00ader until morn\u00ading before part\u00ading ways. No one knows they\u2019re doing this, and because it\u2019s 1995<\/span> there are no text updates to friends from the loos, no loca\u00adtion pins on social media, and not a\u00a0sin\u00adgle pho\u00adto of them look\u00ading adorable in the vinyl shop or on the fer\u00adris wheel. But the most strik\u00ading thing about watch\u00ading Before Sun\u00adrise today is how inti\u00admate<\/i> it feels to wit\u00adness these two pay such focused atten\u00adtion to each oth\u00ader, nev\u00ader break\u00ading the flow to doc\u00adu\u00adment their aven\u00adture for their friends or even their future selves.<\/p>\n Star\u00adring a\u00a0Gen X\u00a0coun\u00adter\u00adcul\u00adture dream\u00adboat Ethan Hawke in his greasy-haired prime, along\u00adside Julie Deply as an oth\u00ader\u00adworld\u00adly and slight\u00adly neu\u00adrot\u00adic Parisian, Richard Linklater\u2019s 1995<\/span> film has long since become a\u00a0cult clas\u00adsic, even though it\u2019s osten\u00adsi\u00adbly a\u00a0film in which noth\u00ading real\u00adly hap\u00adpens. Two 20<\/span>-some\u00adthings walk around Vien\u00adna at night, just talk\u00ading. Maybe that\u2019s the fan\u00adta\u00adsy \u2013 to sim\u00adply have someone\u2019s undi\u00advid\u00aded atten\u00adtion. Even before mobile phones became so ubiq\u00adui\u00adtous that Erykah Badu ser\u00ade\u00adnad\u00aded her lover with the words \u200b\u201c<\/span>I can make you put your phone down<\/a>\u201d, hav\u00ading someone\u2019s eyes on you like this would be pret\u00adty incred\u00adi\u00adble. When\u00adev\u00ader I\u00a0re-watch this film, I\u2019m so struck by the van\u00adish\u00ading beau\u00adty of the unin\u00adter\u00adrupt\u00aded moment that it makes me want to hurl my phone \u2013 and every\u00adone else\u2019s too \u2013 into the\u00a0ocean.<\/p>\n I first saw Before Sun\u00adrise<\/i> in the cin\u00ade\u00adma as a\u00a0young teenag\u00ader, before I\u2019d had so much as a\u00a0first kiss. It was the first time I\u2019d seen a\u00a0girl and a\u00a0boy talk<\/i> like that \u2013 it was a\u00a0for\u00adma\u00adtive expe\u00adri\u00adence, to put it mild\u00adly. I\u00a0didn\u2019t yet have strong ideas of what I\u00a0want\u00aded my future to be, but this film made me feel like life would be an adven\u00adture, full of excep\u00adtion\u00adal peo\u00adple and enchant\u00adi\u00adng moments, wait\u00ading to be expe\u00adri\u00adenced on beau\u00adti\u00adful sum\u00admer evenings in Euro\u00adpean cities. My VHS<\/span> copy got warped with repeat plays. I\u00a0only watch the film once a\u00a0year now, but each time I\u2019m pleased to find that not only does it hold up, but there\u2019s a\u00a0gen\u00aduine sin\u00adcer\u00adi\u00adty that nev\u00ader fails to brush away my cyn\u00adi\u00adcism. Even now, the hottest part is all that intense talking.<\/p>\n But is that just because Jesse and C\u00e9line know they only have one night? So great was their youth\u00adful belief in the gen\u00aderos\u00adi\u00adty of the uni\u00adverse, sure to send them end\u00adless amaz\u00ading dates in the future, that they decid\u00aded not to exchange num\u00adbers \u2013 they don\u2019t want to spoil their rela\u00adtion\u00adship by let\u00adting it fiz\u00adzle out. Usu\u00adal\u00adly the obsta\u00adcle in the \u200b\u201c<\/span>missed con\u00adnec\u00adtions\u201d film genre is exter\u00adnal \u2013 at least one par\u00adty is engaged or mar\u00adried (Lost in Trans\u00adla\u00adtion<\/i>, Sleep\u00adless in Seat\u00adtle<\/i>, Casablan\u00adca<\/i>), there\u2019s some med\u00adical issue like a\u00a0coma or mem\u00ado\u00adry loss (Eter\u00adnal Sun\u00adshine of the Spot\u00adless Mind<\/i>, For\u00adev\u00ader Young<\/i>), or time trav\u00adel throws a\u00a0span\u00adner in the works (The Lake House<\/i>, The Time Trav\u00adel\u00ader\u2019s Wife<\/i>). The deci\u00adsion to not exchange num\u00adbers is hard to watch for any\u00adone who\u2019s been alive in the era of Tin\u00adder, or indeed past age 22<\/span>. But as a\u00a0cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic tool it real\u00adly cranks up the emo\u00adtion\u00adal inten\u00adsi\u00adty, and as the pre-dawn light fills the screen you can prac\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly feel the agony of the char\u00adac\u00adters, not want\u00adi\u00adng the encounter to end.
