D\u2019Wayne Wiggins, a singer, guitarist, and co-founder of the new jack swing trio Tony! Toni! Ton\u00e9!<\/a>, has died of bladder cancer. The news was shared<\/a> on Wiggins and the band\u2019s official social media accounts. Wiggins was 64 years old.<\/p>\n \u201cD\u2019Wayne\u2019s life was incomparable, and his music and service impacted millions around the world, including in his hometown of Oakland, California,\u201d Wiggins\u2019 family said in a statement. \u201cHe was a guitarist, producer, composer, philanthropist, mentor and founding member of Tony! Toni! Tone! He was deeply passionate about providing artist development and mentorship to emerging young musicians, helping to shape the early careers of many.\u201d<\/p>\n D\u2019Wayne Patrice Wiggins co-founded Tony! Toni! Ton\u00e9! with his brother Raphael Saadiq<\/a> and cousin Timothy Christian Riley in the 1980s. Together, they were key figures of new jack swing, the genre that fused R&B, hip-hop, pop, dance, and jazz music to create something new and effervescent.<\/p>\n Tony! Toni! Ton\u00e9! released their debut album, Who?<\/em>, in 1988. The album contained several popular songs, including \u201cLittle Water\u201d and \u201cBaby Doll,\u201d and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The trio\u2019s second album, 1990\u2019s The Revival<\/em>, contained the hit single \u201cFeels Good\u201d and proved even more popular, earning a platinum certification.<\/p>\n Tony! Toni! Ton\u00e9!\u2019s third album, 1993\u2019s Sons of Soul<\/em>, featured another major hit (\u201cIf I Had No Loot\u201d) and helped earn them their first Grammy<\/a> nomination: Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal, for \u201cAnniversary.\u201d The trio also performed at the 1994 Grammy Awards, joining Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and others in a star-studded tribute to Curtis Mayfield. Tony! Toni! Ton\u00e9! released just one more album, 1996\u2019s House of Music<\/em>, before going on hiatus. They ultimately reunited, in 2023, for the Just Me and You Tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n D\u2019Wayne Wiggins released his lone solo album, Eyes Never Lie<\/em>, in 2000. He self-produced the 13-song Motown release, which boasted guest contributions from Carlos Santana, Darius Rucker, and the saxophonist Najee.<\/p>\n Wiggins continued to work behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer. Among the notable songs he helped create were: Destiny\u2019s Child on \u201cFancy,\u201d \u201cKilling Time,\u201d and \u201cMy Song,\u201d Christina Aguilera\u2019s \u201cImpossible,\u201d Alicia Keys\u2019 \u201cDiary,\u201d and Nivea\u2019s \u201cHave Mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n
