Anora<\/em> has won the 2025 Academy Award<\/a> for Best Picture. Sean Baker\u2019s comic drama about a dancer and sex worker from Brooklyn who elopes with the son of a Russian oligarch beat out A Complete Unknown<\/em><\/a>, The Brutalist<\/em>, Dune: Part Two<\/em>, Wicked<\/em><\/a>, Conclave<\/em>, Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em>, I\u2019m Still Here<\/em>, Nickel Boys<\/em>, and The Substance<\/em> to take the prize.<\/p>\n Tonight\u2019s formal winners for Best Picture are producers Alex Coco, Samantha Quan, and Sean Baker. Coco took the microphone first, saying: \u201cWe made this movie for six million dollars shooting on location in New York with about 40 crew members! They\u2019re all back in New York; this is for you guys\u2026 If you\u2019re making independent films, keep doing it. We need more\u2014this if proof!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know how this can be real life. This is really an incredible, impossible journey for the past 10 months,\u201d added Quan. \u201cWe made this with very little money, but all of our hearts. To all the dreamers and young filmmakers out there: tell the stories you want to tell, tell the stories that matter to you. you won’t regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n Baker, the director and screenwriter of Anora<\/em>, kept his speech short, yelling, \u201cLong live independent film!\u201d That\u2019s because, earlier in the evening, Baker also accepted the trophies for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.<\/p>\n Anora<\/em> also scooped up wins for Best Actress (Mikey Madison) and Best Film Editing. The movie received an additional nomination<\/a> in the Best Supporting Actor category for Yura Borisov, too.<\/p>\n None of the nominated directors this year had previously helmed a Best Picture winner. A Complete Unknown<\/em> director James Mangold was the crop\u2019s most decorated by the Academy, given a surprising absence of trophies for multi-nominee Denis Villeneuve. This was also the first year since 1969 that two musicals\u2014namely Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> and Wicked<\/em>\u2014had been nominated.<\/p>\n Last year\u2019s Best Picture winner<\/a> was Oppenheimer<\/em>.
