\u00a0Lorne Michaels<\/strong><\/a>, along with many others, celebrated the 50th anniversary of\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0this past weekend.<\/p>\n On Saturday, February 15, the special aired live from New York, featuring a star-studded lineup of alumni, including\u00a0Steve Martin<\/strong>, who has hosted the show 16 times.<\/p>\n But one question lingers as the 80-year-old reflects on the countless moments he\u2019s created on NBC and beyond: will the Emmy-winning producer, writer, and comedian continue his tenure? Find out more below.<\/p>\n Michaels first garnered the attention of\u00a0Dick Ebersol<\/strong>, NBC\u2019s head of late-night television programming, in the early 1970s. At that time, Michaels was a 29-year-old comedy writer from Toronto, Canada.<\/p>\n He served as a producer on\u00a0SNL<\/em>\u00a0from 1975 to 1980, before taking a five-year hiatus to focus on other projects. Since 1985, he has remained at the helm of the show.<\/p>\n With 21 Primetime Emmy Awards from 106 nominations, Michaels has also been instrumental in launching the careers of some of the biggest stars in entertainment.<\/p>\n It\u2019s unclear when exactly Lorne plans on retiring from\u00a0SNL<\/em>. During his 2024\u00a0ET<\/em>\u00a0interview, the writer noted that\u00a0SNL<\/em> had planned their 50th-anniversary special for February 2025, adding, \u201cSo, I will definitely be there for that and definitely be there until then. And then we\u2019ll figure out what we\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n Lorne agreed with\u00a0ET<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0Nischelle Turner<\/strong>\u00a0in 2024 when she noted that many people have thought\u00a0Tina Fey<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>could replace him.<\/p>\n \u201cIt could easily be Tina Fey,\u201d Lorne acknowledged, before adding, \u201cBut there are a lot of people who are there now who are also, you know \u2026\u00a0Tina\u2019s brilliant and great at everything. She\u2019s a very important person in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n Tina started out on\u00a0SNL<\/em>\u00a0in the late 1990s as a writer. She occasionally appeared in sketches as an extra and became the show\u2019s first-ever head female writer.
