The future of TikTok remains uncertain, but with the app still active\u2014and now back on the App Store\u2014following its January 19 ban deadline, it seems to be doing better than expected.<\/p>\n
The company had been under pressure to secure a buyer before the January 19 deadline to comply with a law signed by\u00a0Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in April 2024. However, on Thursday, Trump suggested that the period might be extended further.<\/p>\n \u201cI have 90 days from about two weeks ago, and I\u2019m sure it can be extended, but let\u2019s see,\u201d he said, seemingly misstating the timeline in his executive order. \u201cWe have a lot of people interested in TikTok.\u201d<\/p>\n TikTok has yet to be purchased by another company.<\/p>\n Since President Trump\u2019s extension, several prospects have emerged. According to NPR<\/a> last month, Oracle, Microsoft, and other American investors are preparing a bid to acquire TikTok\u2019s U.S. operations, with guidance from top White House officials. Additionally, in early February, President Trump mentioned that with the creation of the sovereign wealth fund<\/a>, he was \u201cgoing to be doing something perhaps with TikTok,\u201d further hinting at the possibility of the U.S. government playing a role in the sale of the social media app.<\/p>\n As of February 2025, TikTok is still owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based tech company.<\/p>\n TikTok is available for download once again from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, marking the first time since the platform went dark on January 18.<\/p>\n On Thursday, Apple and Google received a letter from Attorney General<\/a> Pam Bondi<\/strong><\/a> informing the companies that the Trump administration would not prosecute them for supporting TikTok, according to sources reported by NPR<\/a>.
