In perfect sync, the Compton rapper repeated the line \u201cTurn his TV off\u201d right as the stadium, and consequently viewers\u2019 TV screens, went black. The camera zoomed out to show the stage shaped like a tic-tac-toe board with the words \u201cGame over\u201d written with lights in the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Lamar\u2019s company with Dave Free, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-launches-new-company-pglang\/\">pgLang<\/a>, handled the creative direction for the halftime show performance. Diversified Production Services served as producers for the halftime show telecast with Jay-Z\u2019s Roc Nation and Jesse Collins as executive producers, Hamish Hamilton as director, and Roc Nation acting \u201cas the strategic entertainment advisor of the live performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The halftime show performance arrived on the heels of Lamar\u2019s surprise November album, <em>GNX<\/em>, and a spate of victories at <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/topics\/grammys\/\">the 2025 Grammy Awards<\/a>. Thanks to his smash hit \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d Lamar swept all five categories in which he was nominated: <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-wins-song-of-the-year-for-not-like-us-at-2025-grammys\/\">Song<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-wins-record-of-the-year-for-not-like-us-at-2025-grammys\/\">Record of the Year<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-wins-best-rap-song-for-not-like-us-at-2025-grammys\/\">Best Rap Song<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-wins-best-rap-performance-for-not-like-us-at-2025-grammys\/\">Best Rap Performance<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-wins-best-music-video-for-not-like-us-at-2025-grammys\/\">Best Music Video<\/a>. To rub it in even more, the gala <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-wins-record-of-the-year-for-not-like-us-at-2025-grammys\/\">sang along loudly<\/a> to the song, including its most damning accusation.<\/p>\n<p>The performance also came on the heels of <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/drake-withdraws-legal-action-against-spotify-and-universal-music-group-over-not-like-us-streams\/\">a federal lawsuit<\/a> that Drake filed against Universal Music Group (UMG) over its promotion of \u201cNot Like Us.\u201d The litigation has led to speculation about whether Lamar would perform the diss song on a huge national stage. A few hours before the halftime show, Drake\u2019s legal team released a new statement about \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d writing: \u201cUMG is masquerading as a champion of artist freedom by calling its actions merely \u2018entertainment,\u2019 but there is nothing entertaining about pedophilia or child abuse in the real world. We are confident that the evidence we will ultimately present at trial, including information we\u2019ve already learned and continue to receive since filing the lawsuit, will expose UMG\u2019s gross prioritization of its own corporate profits and executive bonuses over its exclusively signed artists\u2019 well-being and the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lamar <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/thepitch\/super-bowl-halftime-show-review-dr-dre-eminem-mary-j-blige-snoop-dogg-kendrick-lamar\/\">made his Super Bowl halftime show debut<\/a>, in 2022, in Inglewood, California. He was among several performers that night, as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Anderson .Paak, and Mary J.
