Assuming unit elasticity on a 10% tariff, we\u2019d import $384 bn. The respective tariff revenue is $42.7 bn or $38.4 bn \u2014 this is the amount of tax revenue irrespective of what happens to the exchange rate or the gate price in China (if you don\u2019t understand this point, it\u2019s the difference between tax incidence and formal revenues).<\/p>\n<p>Whether the China tariffs of 2025 constitute the third or fourth largest tax increase depends on how the ACA revenue estimates played out, after various legislative changes.<\/p>\n<p>Combined <em>two<\/em> year 2018-2019 Section 232 and Section 301 tariffs amounted to $80 billion [<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/research\/all\/federal\/trump-tariffs-trade-war\/\">Tax Foundation<\/a>], so the taxes on imported goods coming from China still amount to the biggest one year tariff revenue increase.<\/p>\n<p>How well does my estimate of $38 bn fit with other estimates. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crfb.org\/blogs\/how-much-revenue-will-trumps-tariffs-raise\">Tax Foundation<\/a> just released estimates of $20 bn revenue raised for the remaining 7 months of FY 2025, or $34 bn\/year, so pretty close.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has stated that the EU is now in the crosshairs [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/03\/business\/economy\/trump-tariffs-european-union.html\">NYT<\/a>].<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-says-britains-out-of-line-on-trade-but-wants-to-work-it-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tariffs<\/a>\u00a0\u201cwill definitely happen with the European Union,\u201d Mr. Trump told the\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TsTiuB1vUnI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a> Sunday evening, and they are coming \u201cpretty soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is 2023 import value from the EU:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/GoodsImports_fm_EU.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55504\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/GoodsImports_fm_EU.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/GoodsImports_fm_EU.png 707w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/GoodsImports_fm_EU-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/GoodsImports_fm_EU-624x372.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/data-visualization\/tradestats-express-us-trade-partner-countries-and-regions\">ITA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is the amount larger than for either Canada or Mexico (for just goods), it\u2019s of a different character, much more characterized by intra-industry trade.
