Since 90% of consumption is from Mexico, one might think the US is a large country; on the other hand, elasticities matter. This <a href=\"https:\/\/migrationletters.com\/index.php\/ml\/article\/view\/4834#:~:text=the%20following%20behavior:-,A%201%25%20increase%20in%20price%20generates%20a%20reduction%20in%20demand,avocado%20to%20decrease%20by%201.38%25.\">study by Ambrozek et al. (2019)<\/a> indicates 0.2 demand elasticity at shipper level. Let\u2019s guess that supply elasticity is 0.2 (about 80% of Mexican exports go to the US, and about 85% of production is exported;<a href=\"https:\/\/ageconsearch.umn.edu\/record\/11925\/files\/rr980345.pdf\"> Carman and Kraft (1998)<\/a> cite 0.2.<\/p>\n<p>This implies about a 50%-50% split of the tariff, counterfactual February price equal to December, and no exchange rate offset.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/avocadopix1.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55462\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/avocadopix1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"907\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/avocadopix1.png 907w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/avocadopix1-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/avocadopix1-768x450.png 768w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/avocadopix1-624x366.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 1:<\/strong> PPI avocado n.s.a., 1991=100 (blue), implied price (red square).
