The White House announced in a memo that federal loans and grants would temporarily pause starting on Tuesday, January 28, at 5 p.m. ET. Per CNN<\/a>, White House Office of Management and Budget acting director Matthew Vaeth<\/strong> wrote that Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s administration \u201cmust temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance.\u201d So, does this mean that all federal assistance will end?<\/p>\n The news comes on the heels of Trump\u2019s decision<\/a> to put federal diversity, equity and inclusion employees<\/a> (otherwise known as DEI workers) on paid leave as the administration aims to terminate DEI-related programs and offices.<\/p>\n Find out what federal aid programs are being frozen temporarily below.<\/p>\n According to Vaeth\u2019s memorandum obtained by CNN, the temporary pause of certain federal aid \u201cwill provide [Trump\u2019s] administration time to review agency programs and determine the best uses of the funding for those programs consistent with the law and the president\u2019s priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n Vaeth did not specify which federal assistance programs will be paused. However, according to NBC New York,<\/a> social security and medicare benefits will not be affected.<\/p>\n Per Vaeth\u2019s memo, \u201cother relevant agency activities [may] be implicated by the executive orders, including, but not limited to, financial assistance for foreign aid, nongovernmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology and the green new deal.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cCareer and political appointees in the executive branch have a duty to align federal spending and action with the will of the American people as expressed through presidential priorities,\u201d Vaeth wrote, adding in the memo that the budget office \u201cmay grant exceptions allowing federal agencies to issue new awards or take other actions on a case-by-case basis.\u201d<\/p>\n It is not clear if the free application for federal student aid (a.k.a FAFSA<\/a>) will be impacted by the temporary pause of federal grants.<\/p>\n It\u2019s still unclear if food stamps<\/a>, most commonly known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (or SNAP benefits), will be paused.<\/p>\n \n\t\t<\/div>\nWhy Is Trump Freezing Federal Loans and Assistance?<\/h2>\n
