Initially, the actor prerecorded his vocals to portray the iconic folk-rock singer-songwriter. However, the film\u2019s director, James Mangold, revealed that they \u201cdidn\u2019t use them in the movie.\u201d Instead, because Chalamet\u2019s live performance so effectively captured the essence of the singer, they opted to use the real thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I first got together with Tim, I heard some of the stuff they had prerecorded, and I said, \u2018Who\u2019s singing this stuff?\u2019\u201d Rob Paparozzi<\/strong>, Chalamet\u2019s harmonica coach on A Complete Unknown<\/em>, told The Post<\/em>. \u201cHe said, \u2018That\u2019s me. I\u2019m singing all my own parts.\u2019 I was floored because I was so impressed \u2026 Timmy had already put in the work and committed to this. It wasn\u2019t like he just wanted to fake it.\u201d<\/p>\nTod Maitland<\/strong>, the movie\u2019s sound mixer, told Variety<\/em> that Chalamet had to work hard to match Dylan\u2019s unique singing style.<\/p>\n\u201cBob\u2019s a mutterer, and Timmy gave his best mutter, so it was pulling that out. He would go from there to that twangy, tough voice that could shrill your eardrums,\u201d Maitland said. \u201cBut there were, like four different voices inside of Timmy capturing all those and giving them all character was a whole other dimension.\u201d<\/p>\n

To portray Dylan, Chalamet had to learn to play a couple of instruments, like the guitar, in addition to singing.<\/p>\n
Guitar coach Larry Saltzman<\/strong>, who began working with Chalamet in 2019, told the New York Post<\/em> that the actor \u201ctook to\u201d playing the guitar \u201cimmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cHe never got hung up on anything. He just rose to the occasion every time. It\u2019s a combination of hard work and natural talent,\u201d Saltzman added.<\/p>\n
