DJ Unk<\/strong><\/a> (nee Anthony Leonard Platt) has died<\/a> at age of 43. His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt<\/strong>, took to social media on Friday to share the sad news. \u201cPlease respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father,\u201d Sherkita wrote in a simple but heartfelt Facebook post<\/a>. \u201cOur life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unk\u2019s first record label, Big Oomp Records, took to Instagram<\/a> to honor the late star on Friday with a carousel of photos, as well. \u201cIt is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as \u2018DJ Unk,’\u201d they wrote in part on January 24. \u201cOn behalf of Big Oomp Records and the BOR Family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He Suffered From Health Problems<\/h2>\n

Though a cause of death has not been released, a source allegedly told The New York Post<\/em><\/a> on January 24 that the rapper dealt with \u201chealth complications.\u201d According to the outlet, the musician was hospitalized for a heart attack in 2009. He had suffered partial paralysis in his left arm and chest pains leading up to the serious medical event. \u201cIt\u2019s a blessing for me to celebrate [another] birthday,\u201d he told XXL<\/a> in 2010.\u00a0 \u201cI had some medical issues going on from not eating the right food and that just come from when I stopped taking care of myself. I got to get healthy not just for my sake, but also for my kids and for my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

DJ Unk Hit His Career Peak in the Mid-2000s<\/h2>\n

In 2006, he rapper\u2019s single \u201c2 Step\u201d reached number for\u00a0on the Billboard<\/em> Hot Rap Songs chart. His hit \u201cWalk It Out\u201d was featured in street dancer drama Stomp the Yard <\/em>in 2007. According to NorthJersey.com<\/em><\/a>, he was a key artist in snap music, a subgenre of crunk.<\/p>\n

He Began His Career at Just 17<\/h2>\n

The Atlanta native reportedly began his career as a DJ at the young age of 17, in 1998. According to Variety,<\/em><\/a> he worked with DJ Montay<\/strong> and DJ Jelly<\/strong> as the Southern Style DJs. Big Oomp Records signed him in 2000 and subsequently released his debut album \u201cBeat\u2019n Down Yo Block!\u201d in 2000.<\/p>\n

DJ Unk\u2019s Last Major Performance Was in 2023<\/h2>\n

Per Variety,<\/em> Unk appeared at the BET Awards<\/a> in 2023, performing \u201cWalk It Out\u201d during a medley featuring F.L.Y<\/strong>. and Soulja Boy.<\/strong> He released his final album, Fresh Off Dem Papers<\/em>, back in 2017.<\/p>\n
