The memo also called for the revocation of Executive Order 11246, issued by <strong>Lyndon B. Johnson<\/strong> in 1965, is an executive order (not a law) that applies to federal contractors. It:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prohibits discrimination in hiring, promotion, and treatment based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.<\/li>\n<li>Mandates affirmative action for federal contractors to ensure equal employment opportunities, requiring them to take proactive steps to address disparities and promote diversity in the workplace.<\/li>\n<li>Created the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) to monitor and enforce these requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Is President Trump\u2019s DEI Executive Order?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">President Trump\u2019s executive order mandates that federal hiring, promotions, and performance reviews prioritize \u201cindividual initiative\u201d over \u201cDEI-related factors.\u201d Trump and other critics have argued that federal DEI programs, including \u201cenvironmental justice\u201d and \u201cequity initiatives,\u201d discriminate against groups like white Americans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">Tuesday\u2019s order also extends beyond federal agencies, instructing the attorney general to submit, within 120 days, \u201crecommendations for enforcing federal civil rights laws\u201d and to take measures to discourage the private sector from engaging in illegal discrimination or DEI practices. (Photo by Jim WATSON \/ AFP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>How Many Federal DEI Employees Are There?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"primary\" class=\"content-area\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-14\">According to multiple outlets, including\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cgj288ywj23o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">BBC<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0it\u2019s unclear\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/feature\/how-many-federal-dei-employees-are-there-5364367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">how many federal employees<\/a>\u00a0will be impacted by Trump\u2019s DEI executive order.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-15\">Under the new order, federal agencies must compile a list of all DEI offices and their staff by Thursday, January 23. By next Friday, January 31, agencies are required to submit a \u201cwritten plan\u201d to begin layoffs of DEI program employees.
