David Lynch<\/strong> died<\/a> at the age of 78. Famous for directing the movies The Elephant Man<\/em> and Mulholland Drive<\/em> and the TV show Twin Peaks<\/em>, the filmmaker revolutionized Hollywood by bringing a surrealist and darker approach to film. Lynch\u2019s family confirmed his death in a statement that they shared to Facebook on January 16, 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,\u201d the post read. \u201cWe would appreciate some privacy at this time. There\u2019s a big hole in the world now that he\u2019s no longer with us. But, as he would say, \u2018Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.\u2019 It\u2019s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lynch is best known for directing Mulholland Drive<\/em> and The Elephant Man<\/em>, but he has also directed a number of popular movies, such as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet<\/em>, 1984\u2019s Dune<\/em> and Lost Highway<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In television, Lynch created and directed Twin Peaks<\/em> in addition to the Showtime continuation, Twin Peaks: The Return,<\/em>\u00a0in 2017. Additionally, he worked on Hotel Room<\/em> and On the Air<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On top of being a filmmaker, Lynch was also an actor with multiple credits under his belt. He starred in the movies Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Dune, The Elephant Man, Lucky<\/em> and The Fabelmans<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lynch also had television credits, including his show Twin Peaks<\/em> as the character Gordon Cole, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, Louie<\/em> and Twin Peaks: The Return<\/em>.<\/p>\n

David Lynch\u2019s Cause of Death<\/h2>\n

Lynch\u2019s family did not publicly disclose his official cause of death. However, he had been battling emphysema for years as a former chain smoker. During a November 2024 interview with PEOPLE<\/em><\/a>, the late filmmaker revealed he started smoking at the age of 8 and quit altogether in 2022 upon his emphysema diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Shortly before he died in January 2025, Deadline<\/em><\/a> reported that Lynch was forced to evacuate his Los Angeles County home<\/a> due to the Sunset fire. According to the outlet, Lynch\u2019s health \u201ctook a turn for the worse\u201d after that.<\/p>\n

Due to his past smoking addiction, Lynch spent his final months on supplemental oxygen, he told PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> in November 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the back of every smoker\u2019s mind is the fact that it\u2019s healthy, so you\u2019re literally playing with fire,\u201d he admitted to the publication. \u201cIt can bite you. I took a chance, and I got bit.\u201d<\/p>\n
