Two hours later they all have neatly organized, new (hand-me-down) wardrobes and I\u2019m sneezing like crazy.<\/p>\n<p>Those days remind me of my one remaining allergy \u2014 dust. And it\u2019s a doozy!<\/p>\n<p>I can power through childbirth no problem (I\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/motherhood\/breech-water-birth\/\">had enough practice<\/a>). I can also push through a 20-mile hike, but dust reduces me to a sneezing pile of grumpiness.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bieler-s-vegetable-broth-to-the-rescue\">Bieler\u2019s Vegetable Broth to the Rescue<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve gotten better about using an air filter when cleaning or switching out clothes in the attic. I also take <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/remedies\/allergy-relief-remedies\/\">some allergy remedies <\/a>and they help a lot. But when the dust or hay fever gets bad, I pull out my go-to recipe for Bieler\u2019s vegetable broth (and sneak in a few extra allergy soothing ingredients).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-bieler-s-vegetable-broth\">What is Bieler\u2019s Vegetable Broth?<\/h3>\n<p>I first heard about this vegetable broth in the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nourishing-Traditions-Challenges-Politically-Dictocrats\/dp\/0967089735\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?tag=wellnessmama-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Nourishing Traditions<\/a>. Bieler\u2019s broth was invented by a doctor named Henry Beiler as a detox soup to help promote healing and cleansing in the body. Dr. Bieler claimed that this detox soup recipe would help restore the correct acid\/alkaline balance in the body. He speculated it also helped balance the body\u2019s sodium\/potassium levels.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits-of-bieler-s-detox-vegetable-soup\">Benefits of Bieler\u2019s Detox Vegetable Soup<\/h3>\n<p>I love the taste of this vegetable-based broth, though it certainly isn\u2019t as flavorful as <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/recipes\/garlic-soup\/\">my favorite garlic soup<\/a>. The vegetable broth\u2019s benefits are in its nourishing qualities and not its taste. It\u2019s a healthy soup used in many cleanses and detox protocols. Cancer patients often use it for an easy source of nourishment that\u2019s easy on the stomach. I use it to calm down my allergies (see my tip for an add-in below).<\/p>\n<p>I also turn to this delicious soup during illness. The high vitamin C and K content make it great for supporting the immune system. It\u2019s naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and packed with veggies and fresh herbs.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-this-broth-traditionally-contains\">This Broth Traditionally Contains<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zucchini\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 A natural source of potassium and sodium, <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/go\/vitaminc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">vitamin C<\/a>, and vitamin B6<\/li>\n<li><strong>String beans\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Also a good source of sodium and potassium, as well as chromium, phosphorus, and choline<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celery\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Excellent source of vitamin K, potassium, folate, and\u00a0pantothenic acid (B vitamins)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parsley\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 A multivitamin in a single plant! Parsley is a great source of vitamin K, vitamin C, antioxidants, and beneficial volatile oils. It\u2019s said to be cleansing and nourishing to the body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-i-often-add\">And I Often Add \u2026<\/h3>\n<p>The true \u201cBieler\u2019s Broth\u201d recipe contains only the ingredients above and it\u2019s wonderful just like that. When allergies hit, I add a few extra ingredients to help calm them down. These are all optional but add flavor and nutrients.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/go\/nettle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>Nettle Leaf\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>\u2013 I love stinging nettle and it\u2019s one of my <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/remedies\/nettle-herb-profile\/\">natural allergy remedies<\/a>. When possible, I add a few leaves of wild harvested nettle to this broth. It grows in our yard, so it\u2019s easy to find during the warmer months. I also harvest and freeze some for winter. Raw nettle can \u201csting\u201d your hands when touched, so be careful harvesting!<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/go\/dandelion-leaf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dandelion Leaf\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>\u2013 Known as a liver cleansing herb, I like to <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/remedies\/dandelion\/\">add dandelion<\/a> to this broth as well. Dandelion greens seem to help my allergies and are great for the skin. I harvest these from our yard too and freeze some in ice cube trays for winter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Garlic cloves\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Adds great flavor, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/remedies\/garlic-herb-profile\/\">benefits the body <\/a>in many ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-make-bieler-s-vegetable-broth\">How to Make Bieler\u2019s Vegetable Broth<\/h2>\n<p>This broth is quick and easy to make. Gather the ingredients above and you can make it in under half an hour. Whether it\u2019s the new year and you\u2019ve resolved to start with a cleanse or just need to detox, Bieler\u2019s broth is a great option. Saute some yellow onion and bell peppers in<a href=\"https:\/\/wellnessmama.com\/health\/olive-oil\/\"> olive oil <\/a>to add more flavor. Season it with a little sea salt, black pepper, or fresh lemon juice. Or try some fresh cilantro to help the body detox heavy metals.<\/p>\n<p>For a heartier soup, try chicken broth or a few cups of vegetable broth instead of water. And if you like the flavor of the broth but want something higher in protein for a meal, it\u2019s easy to add diced chicken breast to the soup.<\/p>\n<p>If my allergies are acting up or the kids need something soothing during illness, then I find the original recipe works best for us.
