Well, there\u2019s always a John Williams. Here\u2019s Tucker in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/opinion\/trump-inherits-a-deeply-damaged-economy-5788154\">EpochTimes<\/a> (reprinted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/economics\/trump-inherits-deeply-damaged-economy\">ZeroHedge<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026U.S. inflation has been accelerating since September 2021. It is now running 3 percent in real time, or 50 percent above the target. This continued pain follows four years of the worst inflation in at least 40 years and probably much longer. By some measures, what we\u2019ve been through equals or exceeds the pain of the 1970s. The only difference this time is that the bean counters in government have gotten better at hiding it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hard to figure out where to start. Second, inflation did accelerate from September 2021 until mid 2022 \u2014 but it\u2019s decelerated since then, substantially.<\/p>\n<p>Third, the target is not 2% for CPI inflation \u2014 the target for CPI inflation consistent with 2% for PCE deflator inflation. Source: BLS, BEA via FRED, NBER, and author\u2019s calculations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fourth, the assertion that the government statisticians are \u201cbetter at hiding it\u201d is the phrase most redolent of the Shadowstats mindset. What does Mr. Tucker have in mind. Well, remember he\u2019s the coauthor with Heritage\u2019s EJ Antoni of the <a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/archives\/2024\/10\/recession-since-2022-magic-asterisk-mystery-meat-special-sauce-approach-to-national-income-accounting\">paper that asserted that properly measured, GDP has been declining since 2022<\/a> \u2014 without ever showing how he constructed his preferred deflator.<\/p>\n<p>So, when next you read some commentator saying that the Biden administration handed a terrible economy to Trump, read carefully.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>[ad_2]<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/archives\/2025\/01\/jeffrey-tucker-in-the-steps-of-shadowstats\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ad_1] Remember Shadowstats?
