According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/moana-2-copyright-lawsuit-massive-box-office-gains-1236106869\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, a new copyright lawsuit was filed in California federal court over the weekend, alleging certain aspects of the film were simply taken from a similar story.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-3\">Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the allegations and the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<h2>When Was the \u2018Moana 2\u2019 Copyright Lawsuit Filed?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\">According to <em>THR<\/em>, the action was filed Friday, January 10, 2025 in California federal court. The highly anticipated animated film debuted to massive popularity on November 27, 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Filed the \u2018Moana 2\u2019 Copyright Lawsuit?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe title=\"Moana 2 | Official Trailer\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hDZ7y8RP5HE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">Per <em>THR<\/em>, <strong>Buck Woodall<\/strong>, an animation screenwriter, claims he wrote an animated film of his own entitled \u201cBucky,\u201d written back in 2003. According to the lawsuit, \u201cMoana and her crew are sucked into a perilous whirlpool-like oceanic portal, another dramatic and unique device-imagery found in Plaintiffs materials that could not possibly have been developed by chance or without malicious intentions.\u201d Among other alleged similarities are a hero seeking to break a curse and a perilous journey to locate and save an ancient island.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-6\">Additionally, the complaint levels claims that the defendants had received story elements for the original <em>Moana<\/em> from Woodall himself. \u201cDisney\u2019s <em>Moana<\/em>\u00a0was produced in the wake of Woodall\u2019s delivery to the Defendants of virtually all constituent parts necessary for its development and production after more than 17 years of inspiration and work on his animated film project,\u201d states the complaint.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\">Defendants include Dreamworks Animation\u2019s head of development <strong>Jenny Marchick<\/strong>, who at the time was a director of development for Mandeville Films, who had a \u201cfirst look\u201d deal with the animation giant.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">Disney denies the allegations, stating that nobody on the Disney projects had seen Woodall\u2019s creative work. \u201c<em>Moana<\/em> was not inspired by or based in any way on [Woodall] or his \u2018Bucky\u2019 project, which I learned of for the first time after this lawsuit was filed,\u201d director <strong>Ron Clements<\/strong>, one of the directors of the first <em>Moana<\/em>, wrote in his court declaration, per the outlet. Disney also reportedly included supporting documents showing the research, development, story ideas, and even travel journals for <em>Moana<\/em>, to the court.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">According to <em>THR<\/em>, a judge ruled in November 2024 that the first lawsuit for<em> Moana<\/em> would not go forward because Woodall brought the action \u201ctoo late.\u201d With the release of the sequel came an opportunity to bring the suit again.<\/p>\n<h2>How Much Has \u2018Moana 2\u2019 Earned at the Box Office So Far?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/12\/moana-2-surfs-past-800m-global-mufasa-nears-150m-international-box-office-1236241819\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Deadline<\/em> <\/a>reported on December 24, 2024, that <em>Moana 2<\/em> had raked in a gigantic sum in excess of $800 million. By January 5, per <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/box-office\/box-office-milestones-nosferatu-100-million-globally-moana-2-950-million-1236265720\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Variety<\/em><\/a>, the film was well on its way to a billion in revenue, surpassing $950 million. It debuted at over $220 million in November. Woodall is seeking $10 billion in damages, or 2.5 percent of gross revenue.
