As voting took place in the House on Friday, January 3, 2025, Americans were curious how he would retain his Speakership position and what it would take to lose his place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-3\">Just when the House began its Speakership vote on Friday, January 3, 2025, Johnson released a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerJohnson\/status\/1875230086611272150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">statement<\/a> via X vowing to \u201clead the House Republicans to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, hold the bureaucracy accountable and move the United States to a more sustainable fiscal trajectory.\u201d He then listed what he planned to do if he remained Speaker, including to \u201ccreate a working group comprised of independent experts \u2014 not corrupted by lobbyists and special interests \u2014 to work with DOGE and our committees on implementing recommended government and spending reforms to protect the American taxpayer; task that working group with reviewing existing audits of federal agencies and entities created by Congress \u2014 and issuing a report to my office for public release;\u201d and to \u201crequest House committees undertake aggressive authorizations and appropriations reviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\">Get updates on Johnson\u2019s Speaker of the House position below.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The American people\u00a0have demanded an end to the status quo, and a return to fiscal sanity.\u00a0That\u2019s why the citizens of our great country gave President Trump the White House and Republican control of both chambers of Congress.\u00a0If we don\u2019t follow through on our campaign promise for\u2026<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">\u2014 Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerJohnson\/status\/1875230086611272150?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">January 3, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>How Many Votes Are Needed for Speaker of the House?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\">A person needs 218 out of the 434 votes in the House in order to win the Speakership \u2014 as long as all 434 lawmakers show up to cast their ballots. Currently, the Republicans have a majority in the House, but only by a thin margin. Johnson could not afford to lose one vote.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Mike Johnson Still Speaker of the House?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">At the time of publication, Johnson is still the Speaker of the House. Initially, he appeared to have failed to secure the Speakership position after <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/5064718-live-updates-johnson-speaker-vote-new-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><em>The Hill<\/em><\/a> reported he had a narrow margin for error. At 1:30 p.m. ET, Johnson did not have the votes to keep his place as Speaker with 216 votes up against 215 votes for <strong>Hakeem Jeffries<\/strong>. Moreover,<strong>\u00a0Thomas Massie <\/strong>voted for<strong> Tom Emmer<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ralph Norman <\/strong>voted for<strong> Jim Jordan <\/strong>and<strong> Keith Self <\/strong>voted for <strong>Byron Donalds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/house-speaker-vote-congress-01-03-25\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">CNN<\/a> reported that Johnson managed to remain the Speaker after Self andNorman flipped their votes in support of Johnson.<\/p>\n<h2>How Many Republicans Are in the House?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">There is a total of 435 seats in the House of Representatives.
