Dr. Manmohan Singh<\/strong>, India\u2019s former prime minister, died<\/a> on December 26, 2024. He was 92 years old. Widely regarded as one of India\u2019s most successful leaders, Singh spearheaded the country\u2019s economic advancements. After news of his death broke, India\u2019s current Prime Minister Modi called Singh one of their \u201cmost distinguished leaders\u201d who left \u201ca strong imprint on [their] economic policy over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAs our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people\u2019s lives,\u201d a statement from Modi read, per the Associated Press.<\/p>\n Learn more about Singh, his education, political career and death, below.<\/p>\n Singh was a politician and economist who was one of India\u2019s longest-serving prime ministers in history, having served from 2004 to 2014. He was also the first Sikh PM of India. During his time as India\u2019s PM, Singh met with some of the world\u2019s leaders, including two U.S. president Barack Obama <\/strong><\/a>and Germany\u2019s former chancellor Angela Merkel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n During Singh\u2019s time as PM, he led India\u2019s economic reform program. Though this was a strong feat, Singh was criticized for alleged corruption over the 2010 Commonwealth Games. His premiership ended in 2014.<\/p>\n Before he rose to prominence in the political world, Singh earned his bachelors and masters degrees at\u00a0Panjab University, then attended St John\u2019s College, Cambridge and Nuffield College, Oxford.<\/p>\n Singh was being treated by doctors for \u201cage-related medical conditions,\u201d New Delhi\u2019s All India Institute of Medical Science revealed in a statement, according to the Associated Press<\/a>. Following a \u201csudden loss of consciousness at home,\u201d the hospital explained that \u201cresuscitative measures were started immediately at home.\u201d<\/p>\n After Singh was brought to the medical facility at 8:06 p.m. local time, the hospital declared that the late politician \u201ccould not be revived\u201d despite \u201call efforts,\u201d and he was \u201cdeclared dead at 9:51 p.m\u201d local time, according to the AP.<\/p>\n Singh married his wife, Gursharan Kaur<\/strong>, in 1958.
