Gis\u00e8le Pelicot<\/strong> is being hailed a hero around the world. The 72-year-old\u2019s bravery for waiving anonymity in her sexual assault case has sparked a movement in France and across multiple countries for victims of abuse to speak out. In the trial against her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot<\/strong>, known as the Mazan mass rape case, Gis\u00e8le testified that she was drugged and raped for a decade by not only her ex-husband but also dozens of strangers whom he invited over while he filmed the assaults. Dominque was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated rape. Gis\u00e8le and Dominique\u2019s daughter, Caroline Darian<\/strong>, speculated whether or not she was a victim of rape by Dominique, though he vehemently denied this. Caroline\u2019s book, Et j\u2019ai cess\u00e9 de t\u2019appeler papa<\/em> (which translates to And I stopped calling you father,<\/em>\u00a0according to The Guardian<\/em><\/a>) explores how she came to terms with the case against her father.<\/p>\n The three-month trial concluded in December 2024. Gis\u00e8le\u2019s supporters and feminist groups have campaigned for change when it comes to sexual assault cases and predators\u2019 accountability. According to the New York Post<\/em><\/a>, Fanny Foures of the organization Les Amazones pointed out, \u201cMen are starting to talk to women \u2014 their girlfriends, mothers and friends \u2014 in ways they hadn\u2019t before. It was awkward at first, but now real dialogues are happening. Some women are realizing, maybe for the first time, that their ex-husbands violated them, or that someone close to them committed abuse. And men are starting to reckon with their own behavior or complicity \u2014 things they\u2019ve ignored or failed to act on. The Pelicot brothers also had the chance to face their father, whom Florian called \u201cthe devil,\u201d according to The Guardian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cLearning that my father is one of the biggest criminals of the last 20 years \u2014 how do you rebuild from that?\u201d Florian asked before looking at Dominique to say, \u201cYou always said our mother was a saint, but you were the devil in person.\u201d<\/p>\n Florian also testified that his father photographed his now-ex-wife while she was nude. He also recalled the years when Dominique secretly drugged Gis\u00e8le, but at the time, Florian and David thought their mother had Alzheimer\u2019s because she acted \u201cgroggy\u201d and absent sometimes.<\/p>\n \u201cI saw my mother switch off, I felt she was no longer with us. She was completely groggy, staring ahead,\u201d Florian said. \u201cI said, \u2018Mum are you OK? Dad, is there a problem?\u2019 He got up fast and said \u2018I\u2019ll put her to bed.\u2019 We went home. But imagine if I had forgotten something and gone back to the house \u2014 what I would have found? He had planned to do to her what we now know he did.\u201d<\/p>\n David then took the stand to discuss how his wife had also been photographed naked by Dominique. \u201cWhen I discovered that my wife, when pregnant with twins, was photographed \u2014 and I don\u2019t know how many photographs \u2014 I want to ask: \u2018How could you do such a thing?\u2019\u201d David asked his father in court.<\/p>\n The eldest Pelicot brother also pointed out that their sister \u201cis fighting a battle, the hardest battle of her life, and we\u2019ll always be there for her.\u201d David then added, \u201cI\u2019d like to say to all women who are mothers, and all girls \u2026 as they start their life as young women, please, please don\u2019t be afraid to speak out. It\u2019s not a supposition, it\u2019s a reality. I know it,\u201d she said, according to The Guardian<\/em>. During another point in the trial, Caroline speculated whether her father abused her. \u201cHow could he have photographed me in the middle of the night without waking me? Did he also drug me? Worse still, did he abuse me?\u201d she reportedly asked.<\/p>\n Dominique claimed he never sexually abused Caroline nor any of his and Gis\u00e8le\u2019s grandchildren.
