In March, a panel of academics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2420732-surprise-decision-not-to-define-the-anthropocene-shocks-scientists\/\">rejected the proposal to define a new epoch<\/a> by 12 to 4 votes. Yet for the team behind the proposal, work on defining the term \u2013 which highlights rapid, human-induced changes to Earth \u2013 continues.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, the Holocene, which began about 11,700 years ago, remains the current epoch.
