In this new chapter, we won\u2019t be following Geralt; instead, his adopted daughter Ciri takes center stage as our witcher protagonist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement, we spoke with key leads at CD Projekt Red to delve deeper into this trailer and learn how the studio is gearing up to introduce Ciri as the lead in a brand-new Witcher saga that will respect the series\u2019 past (and players\u2019 choices in it) while leading the series boldly into a new era.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"The Witcher IV \u2014 Cinematic Reveal Trailer | The Game Awards 2024\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/54dabgZJ5YA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A New Ciri<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the reveal trailer, we\u2019re introduced to the village of Stromford, an isolated settlement located deep in the north of The Continent. In this scene, a young woman, Mioni, is selected as a sacrifice to ward off a local monster. This is where we see Ciri for the first time \u2013 older, stronger, and brandishing those iconic steel and silver swords.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Witcher IV<\/em> takes place \u201ca few years\u201d after the end of <em>The Witcher 3<\/em>, according to Narrative Director on <em><em>The Witcher IV<\/em><\/em>, Philipp Weber. While the details of what brought Ciri to this particular place and time are still under wraps for now, we\u2019re shown that Ciri has mutated eyes, an indication that she\u2019s completed the Trial of the Grasses to become a witcher in her own right.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the events of both <em>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/em> \u2013 not to mention Andrzej Sapkowski\u2019s saga of Witcher novels, which the games are based upon \u2013 Ciri is set up as a secondary protagonist, and her personality is very much established. By the end, she is by no means just an extension of Geralt, but a fully-fledged character ready to take on a new journey.<\/p>\n<p>That journey could have gone in several directions depending on the ending players received in <em>The Witcher 3. <\/em>While CD Projekt Red\u00a0is keeping specifics close to its chest, Weber assures us that <em><em>The Witcher IV<\/em> <\/em>will handle its predecessor\u2019s multiple endings, and that personal choice is something they aim to honour in this next game.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/xxboxnews.blob.core.windows.net\/prod\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/Ciri-1-3459250022b41b4f938f.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-206299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/xxboxnews.blob.core.windows.net\/prod\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/Ciri-1-3459250022b41b4f938f.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/xxboxnews.blob.core.windows.net\/prod\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/Ciri-1-3459250022b41b4f938f-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/xxboxnews.blob.core.windows.net\/prod\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/Ciri-1-3459250022b41b4f938f-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/xxboxnews.blob.core.windows.net\/prod\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/Ciri-1-3459250022b41b4f938f-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Differences Between Geralt and Ciri<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The studio is keen to emphasise that while Geralt is a seasoned witcher who typically prefers to remain impartial, Ciri is a character that will often take a more aggressive stance driven by personal motivation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeralt has already created a code for himself, and he\u2019s gone through a ton of experiences to get to that\u00a0\u00a0point,\u201d Weber explains. \u201cWith Ciri, we now have the opportunity to show a lot of those experiences as she finds her own code, and her own way of handling these tough things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We see this in the trailer reveal, as Ciri ventures into the forest and tells Mioni to flee back to the village, in the hopes that it will save her. What\u2019s interesting to note is that the inhabitants of Stromford don\u2019t react positively to the sight of a\u00a0witcher, even though Ciri is there to do good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s super passionate, super determined and very engaged in this story,\u201d explains Game Director Sebastian Kalemba. \u201cShe will never hesitate; she deeply cares about the other girl here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, despite Ciri\u2019s best intentions and a gruelling battle with a brand-new monster known as a Bauk, Mioni still meets a swift end, accentuating how grim the world of <em>The Witcher IV<\/em> will continue to be, and how its characters may continue to find ways to villainise Ciri\u2019s choices (and your own) despite a well-meaning approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCiri is someone who won\u2019t accept that fate is just given to you, you always have to fight back, and sometimes that\u2019s the right thing to do,\u201d says Weber. \u201cIn this trailer, we also wanted to show some parallels that Mioni\u2019s fate could have also been Ciri\u2019s once upon a time, but she fought back against that fate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The nuance in Ciri\u2019s character also stems from her backstory \u2013 which makes her a great character for a complex, mature story about choices and consequences inside The Witcher\u2019s \u00a0dark and often unsettling world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCiri is definitely a flawed character; she has a lot of darkness in her, she was abandoned, and she\u2019s made terrible mistakes in the past,\u201d Weber explains. \u201cBut she also has some amazing strengths, and I think this is this balance that for us makes her into this great character. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Geralt will return as a character, but his place in the story remains a secret for now.<\/p>\n<p>However, this will also serve as a new beginning for the franchise.
