<\/div>It is rare that a drug becomes a household name and even rarer for one to become a superstar, but with its ability to grab headlines, Ozempic is the Taylor Swift of pharmaceuticals. So just what lies behind its star power? Even as the drug and its derivatives take off, researchers are racing to find out how it works.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re seeing so many incredible benefits,\u201d says Steven Dayan<\/a> at the University of Illinois. \u201cIt\u2019s early days, but it\u2019s looking like these drugs aren\u2019t just going to change medicine but our whole economy.\u201d<\/p>\n Most medicines only treat one or two conditions, meaning that \u201ccure-alls\u201d promising to tackle any and all ailments are usually viewed with scepticism and suspicion. Ozempic seems to buck that trend. Last year, Wegovy \u2013 a version of Ozempic approved for weight loss \u2013 was shown to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke<\/a> by almost 20 per cent. The emergence of \u201cOzempic pregnancies\u201d hinted at fertility benefits<\/a>. People started noticing positive effects on depression and anxiety<\/a>. In May, results showed it also slashed the risk of kidney failure<\/a> and death in people with diabetes during a three-year trial.
