The Dutton family has lost another loved one. Season 5 episode 12 of Yellowstone<\/em><\/a> featured the death of one major character: Colby Mayfield (played by actor Denim Richards<\/strong>). It seems that the fifth and final season of the hit Paramount western show is killing off fan-favorite characters all the time. So, why was Colby\u2019s death necessary?<\/p>\n Hollywood Life<\/strong> is breaking down the decision behind Colby\u2019s heartbreaking on-screen death, below.<\/p>\n Aside from Colby, the biggest character of the show was removed due to star Kevin Costner<\/strong>\u2018s exit<\/a>: John Dutton. It\u2019s kind of poetic because in season 3, Colby gets trampled by a horse multiple times in the river.\u201d<\/p>\n During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, executive producer Christina Voros<\/strong> doubled down on Denim\u2019s statement about the cowboy lifestyle.<\/p>\n \u201cFor anyone who really understands the lifestyle of cowboys and working with animals and the risks of the job \u2014 and Rip says it about himself \u2014 it\u2019s a dangerous job, and this kind of thing happens and it happens in a split-second,\u201d the EP pointed out. \u201cThis death comes as a shock because it\u2019s so simple, and it\u2019s so grounded in the world in which all these characters work that it\u2019s profoundly tragic.\u201d<\/p>\n While acknowledging that the \u201ctiming\u201d of Colby\u2019s death is \u201cjust gut-wrenching,\u201d Christina emphasized that it\u2019s simply \u201cthe risk of the job\u201d that he signed up for.<\/p>\n Season 5 appears to be the last one<\/a> for Yellowstone<\/em>.
