Matt Gaetz<\/strong><\/a> is out of the running to be the next Attorney General \u2014 but he stepped down from his role in the House of Representatives when Donald Trump<\/strong> <\/a>nominated him to be his AG. Now that he\u2019s not part of Trump\u2019s cabinet or the government anymore, can Gaetz<\/a> return to Congress?<\/p>\n Below, we\u2019re breaking down everything we know so far about Gaetz\u2019s future in politics.<\/p>\n In an announcement shared via X<\/a> on November 21, 2024, Gaetz noted that he had \u201cexcellent meetings\u201d with members of the U.S. Senate, and they had \u201cthoughtful feedback\u201d for him.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation [to be AG] was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump\/Vance transition,\u201d the former Congressman wrote. \u201cThere is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I\u2019ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General.\u201d<\/p>\n Gaetz added that he remains \u201cfully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history\u201d and that he \u201cwill forever be honored that President Trump nominated [him] to lead the Department of Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. Although he was never charged with a crime, other accusations of sexual misconduct came to light, including a CNN<\/a> report that claimed he had shown nude pictures of women to members in the House.<\/p>\n During a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson<\/strong>, Gaetz vehemently denied the allegations that he had sex with a teenager.<\/p>\n \u201cI have not had a relationship with a 17-year-old. That is totally false,\u201d he insisted. \u201cThe allegation is \u2014 I read it in the New York Times \u2014<\/em> is that I\u2019ve traveled with some 17-year-old in some relationship. That is false, and records will bear that out to be false. Providing for flights and hotel rooms for people that you\u2019re dating who are of legal age is not a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n The Department of Justice concluded its investigation on Gaetz. However, the House Ethics Committee had reopened its probe.
