The high-tech greenhouse where they live, in Maasbree in the Netherlands, is one possible remedy for a global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2423566-food-costs-more-because-of-climate-change-and-it-will-get-worse\/\">food industry in crisis<\/a>, facing a shortage of land due to climate change and conflict.<\/p>\n<p>In his new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.noorimages.com\/books\/food-for-thought\"><i>Food for Thought<\/i><\/a>, photographer Kadir van Lohuizen captures the food industry\u2019s struggle with these challenges, taking a whistlestop world tour of how the sausage, quite literally, gets made.<\/p>\n<p>While high-tech solutions like the lettuce farm, pictured above, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plenty.ag\/about\/\">Plenty\u2019s<\/a> vertical farm in Compton, California, shown below, promise to deliver us from food apocalypse, van Lohuizen doesn\u2019t shy away from the low-tech dystopia of much of the world\u2019s food production as it is.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"ArticleImage\">\n<div class=\"Image__Wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image lazyload\" width=\"1350\" height=\"900\" alt=\"Kadir van Lohuizen \/ NOOR ?Food for thought? 2021 - 2022 USA May 2023 Plenty is a new vertical farm located in Compton, Los Angeles. They grow lettuce and other leafy greens in a farm of about a hectare. Annual production is suppose to reach 4-5 million pounds \/ year. The farm is highly automated, here the seedlings are planned by robots.
