Yellowstone<\/em><\/a> fans are likely reeling from the news that the hit family drama will be ending after season 5<\/a>. While it\u2019s upsetting to see the original show coming to a close and not getting a season 6<\/a>, there isn\u2019t too much reason to worry. Why? Because there\u2019s already a sequel show that\u2019s been greenlit.<\/p>\n

So, what happened with Yellowstone<\/em>? What is the sequel series going to be about? When will it premiere? HollywoodLife<\/strong> has compiled all the key information about the Yellowstone<\/em> sequel series we know so far.<\/p>\n

What Is The Yellowstone<\/em> Sequel About?<\/h2>\n

Paramount hasn\u2019t revealed too much information about the Yellowstone<\/em> sequel series, but we did get crucial information in recent statements. \u201cThe Dutton story continues, picking up where\u00a0<\/span>Yellowstone<\/i> leaves off in another epic tale.\u00a0 We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world,\u201d David Glasser<\/strong>, CEO of 101 Studios, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/span>We don\u2019t know who is going to star in the Yellowstone<\/em> sequel series or the exact storyline, but it is<\/em> a sequel. The show will feature the Dutton family.<\/p>\n

\u201cYellowstone<\/i>\u00a0has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits\u00a0\u2013 from\u00a01883<\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0Tulsa King<\/i>, and I am confident our\u00a0Yellowstone\u00a0<\/i>sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan<\/strong> and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,\u201d Chris McCarthy<\/strong>, President & CEO Showtime\/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

In February 2023, Deadline<\/em><\/a> reported on the possibility of a Yellowstone sequel, noting that it was \u201cunclear which of the Yellowstone cast\u201d would transition to the new series but that \u201cseveral of the big stars\u201d were \u201cexpected\u201d to appear. The original ensemble includes Kevin Costner<\/strong><\/a>, Wes Bentley<\/strong>, Kelly Reilly<\/strong><\/a>, Luke Grimes<\/strong><\/a>, Cole Hauser<\/strong><\/a>, Kelsey Asbille<\/strong><\/a>, and Gil Birmingham<\/strong>. While the full cast for the sequel series has not been announced, Michelle Pfeiffer<\/strong><\/a> is confirmed to take on the lead role, according to the\u00a0Independent<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

When Will The Yellowstone<\/em> Sequel Series Premiere?<\/h2>\n

The Yellowstone<\/em> sequel series will premiere in December 2023 on Paramount Network and later on Paramount+. Yellowstone\u2019s<\/em> final episodes are expected to premiere in November 2023. It\u2019s uncertain whether or not the shows will crossover at any point or if Yellowstone<\/em> will end before the sequel series premieres.<\/p>\n

Will Kevin Costner Be In The Yellowstone<\/em> Sequel Series?<\/h2>\n

Kevin Costner<\/strong><\/a> is not expected to return as John Dutton in the Yellowstone<\/em> sequel series. Days before the sequel series was officially announced, Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> reported that the Oscar winner was not planning to return beyond season 5. A sequel series wasn\u2019t mentioned, but that\u2019s likely what they were referring to.<\/p>\n

The flagship series has been embroiled in drama over the last few months. In February 2023, Deadline<\/em> reported that co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan<\/strong>, as well as Paramount Global and Paramount Network, were \u201cmoving to end\u201d Yellowstone<\/em> in its current form. At the time, it was reported they were \u201cplotting a franchise extension to continue the Dutton saga.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deadline<\/em> claimed there were \u201cdisagreements over shooting schedules\u201d with Kevin, who plays the Dutton family patriarch. The outlet reported that Kevin only \u201cwanted to shoot for 50 days for the first part of the current season\u201d and only a week shooting the second part of season 5. The tension over the shooting schedules reportedly caused \u201cmorale problems\u201d amongst the rest of the cast.<\/p>\n

In response to an expos\u00e9 about the ongoing drama, Kevin\u2019s lawyer, Marty Singer<\/strong>, released a statement to Puck.News<\/a> on behalf of the actor: \u201cThe idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of season 5 of\u00a0Yellowstone<\/em> is an absolute lie. It\u2019s ridiculous \u2014 and anyone suggesting it shouldn\u2019t be believed for one second. As everyone who knows anything about Kevin is well aware, he is incredibly passionate about the show and has always gone way above and beyond to ensure its success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kevin is currently gearing up for a long directing journey. His latest directorial feature, Horizons<\/em>, has already been filmed, and he\u2019s gearing up to film the movie\u2019s 3 sequels back-to-back. The second film is set to start filming this spring.<\/p>\n

Is Matthew McConaughey Joining The Yellowstone<\/em> Sequel Series?<\/h2>\n

In October 2024, Deadline<\/em><\/a> reported that Matthew McConaughey<\/strong><\/a> was \u201cin negotiations\u201d to star in a Yellowstone series.\u00a0After this news, fans speculated about his potential role in the Yellowstone universe. Since this is a sequel series, he could portray a long-lost Dutton returning to the ranch, which would preserve the Dutton family drama while introducing new challenges.<\/p>\n
