After 70 years of making music, Quincy Jones<\/strong><\/a> died<\/a> at the age of 91. The father of seven<\/a> and 28-time Grammy Award winner<\/a> battled several health setbacks over the years, though his cause of death was not revealed. Over the past several years of his life, Jones opened up about managing brain aneurysms in addition to a diabetic coma \u2014 both of which happened at different times.<\/p>\n

Quincy Jones\u2019 Brain Aneurysms<\/h2>\n

In a June 2018 Facebook<\/a> post, Jones shared the details about his past aneurysms, which \u201cfelt like a shotgun was fired inside of [his] head.\u201d He was just 41 when he suffered from the health scare.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in 1974, I suffered an aneurysm (a weakness in the main artery to the brain that caused it to pop) & it felt like a shotgun was fired inside of my head [sic],\u201d the late jazz artist wrote.<\/p>\n

Jones also described the operation he underwent, which took more than seven hours. After the doctors \u201cdiscovered a second aneurysm that was ready to blow,\u201d he said they \u201chad to schedule a second operation.\u201d The ordeal, Jones noted, led his friends to plan a funeral in case he died during the second operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring this time, it didn\u2019t look too promising, so my friends planned a memorial service for me at The Shrine in LA, & I basically attended my own funeral [sic],\u201d Jones admitted. \u201cMan, everyone was there \u2026 Sidney Poitier<\/strong><\/a>, Sarah Vaughan<\/strong>, you name it. It was special to see so many people there to celebrate what would\u2019ve been my 41 years of life, but to now be in London getting ready for my 85th birthday celebration concert tomorrow at The O2 is absolutely unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the operation, Jones recalled being told that he could \u201cnever\u201d play the trumpet again \u201cbecause of the metal implants.\u201d Nevertheless, he persevered, noting that he wouldn\u2019t let the health setback \u201cstop [him] from pursuing other passions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I sat around feeling sorry for myself, I would\u2019ve never gone on to do \u2018Thriller,\u2019 \u2018We are the World,\u2019 \u2018The Color Purple,\u2019 or anything else that happened post \u201974,\u201d Jones pointed out, before adding that he only had a \u201c1 in 100 chance of survival at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cHeaven\u2019s Girl\u201d artist concluded his Facebook post by writing, \u201cI can truthfully say that I\u2019ve attended my own funeral at age 41 & my own birthday celebration at 85, & I\u2019d take the second over the first, any time [sic]!!\u201d<\/p>\n

What Is a Brain Aneurysm?<\/h2>\n

A brain aneurysm is a \u201cbulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain,\u201d according to Mayo Clinic<\/a>. While aneurysms are common, the medical website points out that a \u201cruptured aneurysm\u201d can be life-threatening.<\/p>\n

Quincy Jones Lived Through a \u2018Diabetic Coma\u2019<\/h2>\n

While taking to Facebook<\/a> in December 2019, Jones recalled the second health scare he experienced and how he managed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2015, I went into a diabetic coma & took what should\u2019ve been my last breath [sic],\u201d the \u201cThriller\u201d collaborator wrote. \u201cBy the grace of God, I made it through, but not without having to make some MAJOR adjustments. Having come up with the likes of Ray Charles<\/strong> & Frank Sinatra<\/strong><\/a>, I had enough alcohol to last multiple lifetimes, & the doctors told me I had to call it quits [sic]!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones then noted that he substituted drinking alcohol with \u201ceating sugar free popsicles,\u201d he managed to lose 50 pounds and \u201cstarted feeling 37 again.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Is a Diabetic Coma?<\/h2>\n

A diabetic coma is a \u201clife-threatening disorder that causes unconsciousness,\u201d per Mayo Clinic<\/a>, and it\u2019s caused by \u201cdiabetes, dangerously high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).\u201d<\/p>\n

What Was Quincy Jones\u2019 Cause of Death?<\/h2>\n

Jones\u2019 cause of death has not been revealed yet. The late pop artist died on November 3, 2024, his family<\/a> confirmed in a statement honoring his contributions to music.<\/p>\n
