That\u2019s close to the long-run historical average of 3.1%. Calculated as 400 times the difference in the natural log of real GDP from the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The new numbers put the <a href=\"http:\/\/econbrowser.com\/recession-index\">Econbrowser recession indicator index<\/a> at 2.4%. The plotted value for each date is based solely on the GDP numbers that were publicly available as of one quarter after the indicated date, with 2024:Q2 the last date shown on the graph.  Shaded regions represent the NBER\u2019s dates for recessions, which dates were not used in any way in constructing the index.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>GDP growth was led by strong spending by consumers, who seem to be <a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/archives\/2024\/10\/confidence-surprises-on-the-upside\">regaining confidence<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2024\/10\/comments-on-september-employment-report.html\"> employment growth<\/a> continues strong. Third-quarter GDP was also boosted by a big increase in government spending associated with military assistance to Israel and Ukraine. A surge in imports, which are subtracted from GDP, held GDP growth back. Slower new home construction also subtracted from GDP growth, but not to the degree that we\u2019d see if the Fed had engineered a big housing crunch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/gdp_components_oct24.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/gdp_components_oct24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"507\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/gdp_components_oct24.png 745w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/gdp_components_oct24-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/econbrowser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/gdp_components_oct24-624x425.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p> Markets also breathed a sigh of relief this week that the military conflict in the Middle East does not look (for now) as if it\u2019s going to lead to a big disruption in oil production or shipping.
