In fact, a student\u2019s own ongoing internal dialogue and thoughts about themselves and their self-identity as learners isn\u2019t just a \u2018factor\u2019 in learning but one of the single most important factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is central to the principle and practice of Social-Emotional Learning (and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachthought.com\/pedagogy\/social-emotional-learning-in-classroom-how\/\">strategies for social-emotional learning<\/a><\/strong>). It might be useful to take a quick look at some of the key ideas and underlying assumptions about tone in learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tone As A Cause And Effect Of Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I. Tone matters. It affects human beings and students are human beings.<\/p>\n<p>II. Tone can be notable in its \u2018tenor\u2019 and value as well as in its abundance or absence. That is, tone can be \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018bad\u2019 and there can be a \u2018lot\u2019 or a \u2018little\u2019 of it.<\/p>\n<p>III. Tone can be both a <em>cause<\/em> and an <em>effect<\/em>. That is to say, tone can cause \u2018something\u2019 or be caused by something. For example, a lack of confidence can <em>create<\/em> an uncertain tone while another tone might create a distinct lack of confidence.<\/p>\n<p>IV. As a factor in \u2018climate,\u2019 tone is closely related to mood and together they contribute greatly to that climate.<\/p>\n<p>VI. Any climate created either is or is not intentionally conducive to creativity, collaboration, and learning.<\/p>\n<p>VII. Students experience some kind of tone in every interaction (even if that tone seems more or less unremarkable\u2014that\u2019s a \u2018clinical\u2019 tone). That is, almost everything a student experiences in the learning process has \u2018tone.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>VIII. Having established that tone affects students and is (through our word choice, among other factors) adjustable, that means that as teachers, we can adjust something that affects students.<\/p>\n<p>IX. To make these adjustments, we have to know what tone is and how it\u2019s adjustable.<\/p>\n<p>X.
