A press conference<\/a> was held on October 24, 2024, about Lyle Menendez<\/strong><\/a> and Erik Menendez<\/strong>\u2018<\/a>s potential resentencing. As support for the Menendez brothers<\/a> poured in following the release<\/a> of Netflix\u2019s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/em><\/a>, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n announced a new court hearing<\/a> for the siblings, which was scheduled to take place on November 29, 2024. The DA, however, has decided to take action earlier and move forward with Erik and Lyle<\/a>\u2018s potential resentencing.<\/p>\n

Hollywood Life<\/strong> has the latest update on Lyle and Erik\u2019s resentencing, below.<\/p>\n

Were Lyle & Erik Menendez Resentenced?<\/h2>\n

Gasc\u00f3n announced during the October 24, 2024, press conference that he \u201cdecided to move forward\u201d with Erik and Lyle\u2019s case review because of the influx of public support for the brothers. The DA added that he is recommending the siblings\u2019 resentencing for immediate parole.<\/p>\n

While explaining that a resentencing \u201cunder the law\u201d focuses \u201cnot necessarily on what the originally crimes were\u201d but whether the inmate has \u201cbeen rehabilitated\u201d and can be \u201creleased safely\u201d to the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no excuse for murder \u2026 because even if you get abused, the right path is to call police, seek help,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n clarified, referring to Erik and Lyle\u2019s choice to kill their late parents, Jos\u00e9<\/strong> and Mary Louise \u201cKitty\u201d Menendez<\/strong><\/a>, in August 1989. However, Gascon added that many victims of sexual abuse \u201cget desperate,\u201d citing female victims \u201cwho have been battered for years\u201d and \u201csometimes will murder their abuser.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Will Lyle & Erik Menendez Be Released?<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s still unclear when the Menendez brothers could be released from prison. Their possible resentencing date has not been set yet.<\/p>\n

When the brothers shot their parents in August 1989, Erik was 18, and Lyle was 21. The brothers are now 53 and 56, respectively<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Do the Menendez Brothers Still Have Money?<\/h2>\n

After more than 20 years behind bars, Lyle and Erik reportedly exhausted any money<\/a> they once had. Their net worths<\/a> are currently unknown.<\/p>\n

Some still believe that the siblings killed their parents to inherit their money \u2014 an accusation that both Lyle and Erik have called inaccurate.<\/p>\n

Why Did the Menendez Brothers Kill Their Parents?<\/h2>\n

Erik and Lyle have maintained the reason for fatally shooting their mother and father. During their 1990s trials, the brothers described the alleged emotional, physical and sexual abuse that they endured during their childhoods. During both of their trials, Erik and Lyle detailed what Jos\u00e9 allegedly did to them when they were children.<\/p>\n

Throughout the trials, defense attorney Leslie Abramson<\/strong><\/a> maintained both Erik and Lyle\u2019s claims<\/a> about the alleged sexual abuse they faced. Although Judge Stanley Weisberg<\/strong><\/a> sentenced them to life without the possibility of parole in 1996, Erik and Lyle sought rehabilitation behind bars, which District Attorney Gasc\u00f3n pointed out in October 2024. Additionally, new evidence<\/a> was handed over to the court for further review. The evidence included two key pieces of information: a letter that Erik had written to his cousin Andy Cano<\/strong><\/a> months before he and Lyle killed their parents, admitting how fearful he was of Jos\u00e9, and an allegation from former Menudo band member\u00a0Roy Rossell\u00f3<\/strong>, who claimed that he was sexually abused by Jos\u00e9 when he was a minor.<\/p>\n
