The Menendez brothers have been infamous criminals ever since killing their parents, Jose <\/a><\/strong>and<\/a> Kitty Menendez<\/a><\/strong>, in 1989. Over 35 years later, their case has resurfaced, especially after the release of Ryan Murphy\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/i><\/a> and new evidence suggesting that their father had sexually abused them throughout their childhood. This evidence includes a letter Erik wrote to his cousin, Andy Cano<\/strong>, months before the crime. He passed away in 2003 from a drug overdose at the age of 29.<\/p>\n Andy was questioned by the brothers\u2019 defense attorney, Leslie Abramson<\/strong><\/a>, and claimed that Erik had confided in him about being sexually abused by their father. While this was a significant issue in the first trial, it resulted in a mistrial. It wasn\u2019t until the second trial that both brothers were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n According to The U.S. Sun<\/i><\/a>, Andy\u2019s sister, Marta<\/strong>, discovered a letter Erik had written to Andy, detailing the abuse. In the letter, Erik wrote, \u201cI\u2019ve been trying to avoid dad.\u00a0 It\u2019s still happening Andy, but it\u2019s worse for me now. I can\u2019t explain it.He\u2019s so overweight that I can\u2019t stand to see him.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0He continued, \u201cI never know when it\u2019s going to happen and it\u2019s driving me crazy. Every night, I stay up thinking he might come in. I need to put it out of my mind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n As of now, it is unclear if the case will be reopened.
