Tumour cells in a mouse\u2019s brain<\/p>\n

A snapshot of a delicate web of tumour cells inside a mouse\u2019s brain has clinched the top prize in this year\u2019s Nikon Small World photography<\/a> competition, which celebrates microscopy.<\/p>\n

Tightly packed, upright strands of a protein known as actin border each cell, which contain green jumbles of tiny tubes, called microtubules, that surround a violet nucleus.<\/p>\n

Bruno Cisterna Irrazabal<\/a> at Augusta University in Georgia, who took the photo, is exploring whether the breakdown of the structures around nuclei could influence the development of neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the main problems with neurodegenerative diseases is that we don\u2019t fully understand what causes them,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cTo develop effective treatments, we need to figure out the basics first.\u201d<\/p>\n
