Liam Payne<\/strong><\/a> opened up about his health over the years before his untimely death<\/a>. The late English singer and former One Direction member died at 31 years old in October 2024, and fans are struggling to come to terms with his tragic death. Amid the shocking news, Hollywood Life<\/strong> has compiled everything that Liam revealed about his mental and physical health, below.<\/p>\n

Liam Payne Struggled With Alcoholism<\/h2>\n

During the early days of Liam\u2019s career with One Direction, he struggled with addiction and alcoholism, which he recalled during a 2021 interview on \u201cThe Diary of a CEO\u201d podcast. The late \u201cStrip That Down\u201d singer recalled the \u201cpills and booze\u201d in addition to his \u201cmoments of suicidal ideation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is some stuff that I\u2019ve definitely never spoken about,\u201d Liam said. \u201cIt was really, really, really severe. It was a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam even admitted that the \u201cday the band ended,\u201d he was thankful and added, \u201cI know a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying that, but I needed to stop or it would kill me.\u201d He elaborated by recalling moments when he\u2019d turn to alcohol during the height of One Direction\u2019s fame.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the band, the best way to secure us, because of how big we\u2019d got, was just to lock us in our rooms,\u201d Liam said, before describing his mindset at the time. \u201cWhat\u2019s in the room? A mini-bar. So, at a certain point I thought, I\u2019m just going to have a party-for-one, and that seemed to carry on for many years of my life. Then, you look back at how long you\u2019ve been drinking, and you\u2019re like, \u2018Jesus Christ, that\u2019s a long time.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Liam Also Had a Kidney Infection<\/h2>\n

In 2023, Liam announced that he was sick with a kidney infection in a video on Instagram<\/a>. He looked incredibly disappointed as he told fans that he\u2019d need to postpone the tour. \u201cI\u2019ve been a little bit unwell recently, and I\u2019ve been in the hospital with a bad kidney infection. We\u2019ve started rehearsals, and I\u2019ve just been advised that now\u2019s just really not the right time to be out on the road, trying to recover from this,\u201d he said in the clip.<\/p>\n

As he explained his illness, he described how painful the infection was in his Instagram caption. \u201cOver the past week I\u2019ve been in hospital with a serious kidney infection, it\u2019s something I wouldn\u2019t wish on anyone, and doctor\u2019s orders are that I now need to rest and recover,\u201d he wrote at the time.<\/p>\n

What Is a Kidney Infection?<\/h2>\n

While Liam didn\u2019t provide many details or specifics about his infection, it can be very serious, especially when in the kidneys. It can lead to permanent damage of the organ or a more serious infection, according to the\u00a0<\/a>Mayo Clinic<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>While Liam didn\u2019t detail his symptoms, some of the symptoms to look out for include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the groin, back, side, or belly. Many of the symptoms also have to do with urinating, such as frequent urination, burning pain when urinating, blood or pus in urine, and cloudy or bad-smelling urine.<\/p>\n

What Liam Said About His Mental Health<\/h2>\n

In July 2023, Liam shared a video to his Instagram Stories opening up about the \u201cconditions\u201d he was diagnosed with, which he did not specify.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know in my last video I mentioned I\u2019d been diagnosed with a couple of conditions and, not to go into too much detail, but one of them I have is, there\u2019s a lot of manic things in my life, which you guys saw,\u201d he said, before briefly mentioning his sobriety journey. \u201cBut the other side of it is and that kind of feels like when I would lose my sobriety in these moments that were super low, and I felt like that today [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n

After pointing out that he had \u201csome amazing people around [him] that kind of look after [him],\u201d the \u201cWhat Makes You Beautiful\u201d artist acknowledged that he occasionally wasn\u2019t \u201creally here\u201d at times.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve filmed this same video about 20 times at different points this year and got too scared to put it out by talking myself out of it,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI\u2019m coming to see how fortunate I am to be in the position I\u2019m in, and I wanna give any of you struggling the gift I was given by sharing some of the things I learned form specialists whilst I was away.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Did Liam Payne Die?<\/h2>\n

Liam reportedly died after falling from the third floor of his hotel room in Buenos Aires in October 2024. It\u2019s still unclear what caused him to fall<\/a>.<\/p>\n
