The Princess Diaries<\/i> remains a beloved film for millions of millennials, and we\u2019re finally getting a third movie, according to Variety<\/em><\/a>. The film\u2019s star,\u00a0Anne Hathaway<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0later shared the news on Instagram<\/a> on Friday, October 4, 2024.\u00a0The original Disney movie, released in 2001, became an instant hit. Based on Meg Cabot\u2019s<\/strong> best-selling books, it follows the story of Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary girl who discovers she\u2019s the princess of Genovia. The Princess Diaries<\/i> launched Anne into stardom and blessed audiences with one of the best onscreen duos: Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews<\/strong><\/a> as Mia and Queen Clarissa Renaldi.<\/p>\n

Following the success of the original film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement<\/i> was released in 2004. Since then, fans have been eagerly demanding a third movie. Recently, there\u2019s been more buzz than ever about The Princess Diaries 3.<\/i> Hollywood Life<\/strong> has everything you need to know about the highly anticipated sequel.<\/p>\n

Talk of The Princess Diaries 3<\/em> has been happening since 2016. Director Garry Marshall<\/strong> was planning a third movie. \u201cI was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago. It looks like we want to do The Princess Diaries 3<\/em> in Manhattan,\u201d Garry told PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> in March 2016. The legendary director passed away a few months later in July 2016 due to complications of pneumonia after suffering a stroke.<\/p>\n

There was also a script at one point. \u201cThere is a script for the third movie\u2026 There is a script,\u201d Anne revealed on Watch What Happens Live<\/em> in 2019. Details about the plot in the script have been kept under wraps. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement<\/em> ended with Mia becoming Queen of Genovia and getting her foot-popping happily ever after with Nicholas. A third movie could take elements of Meg Cabot\u2019s<\/strong> Princess Diaries<\/em> book series and possibly introduce Mia\u2019s half-sister Olivia Grace.<\/p>\n

On Nov. 16, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> reported that a third movie was finally in the works at Disney! While the movie is being written by Aadrita<\/strong> Mukerji<\/strong> (Reacher<\/em>, Supergirl<\/em>), \u201cIt\u2019s not clear whether Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as the down-to-earth royal Mia Thermopolis in the new installment\u201d. It\u2019s also not clear if Julie Andrews will reprise her role. But Anne has expressed interest in returning to the franchise \u2014 she also said Julie would be down to do another movie.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Mia Thermopolis herself confirmed the news via Instagram<\/a>. \u201cMiracles happen. Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues,\u201d the 41 year old actress captioned the post shared on October 4, 2024.<\/p>\n

Release Date<\/h2>\n

As of now, there is no official release date for the third film, which will be directed by Adele Lim<\/strong>. The director told\u00a0\u00a0Variety<\/em><\/a>, \u201cAs a diehard fan of the original \u2018Princess Diaries,\u2019 I\u2019m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.\u201d\u00a0She added, \u201cWe look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cast Interest<\/h2>\n

Although the cast list has not been revealed yet, the main cast from The Princess Diaries<\/i> films is fully on board to return for The Princess Diaries 3<\/i>. \u201cI want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase<\/strong>, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,\u201d Anne said on Watch What Happens Live<\/em> in 2019. \u201cIt\u2019s just we don\u2019t want to unless it\u2019s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It\u2019s as important to us as it is to you, and we don\u2019t want to deliver anything until it\u2019s ready, but we\u2019re working on it, so\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
